Netballers Out, Footballers In: Equal Play Dispute Erupts

Netballers Left in Limbo as League Cites Football Shortages

A passionate regional Victorian mother has lodged a formal complaint with the state’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, sparking a heated debate over the Ballarat Football Netball League’s (BFNL) decision to sideline the Woady Yaloak Football Netball Club’s junior netball program. The league’s move, ostensibly triggered by a lack of junior footballers, has left over 80 young girls facing a season on the sidelines and ignited concerns about fairness and gender equality in community sport.

Woady Yaloak Football Netball Club, a relatively new entrant to the BFNL having joined just three years ago, fielded a promising array of junior teams last season. On Sundays, the club successfully competed with football teams in the Under 10s and Under 12s age groups. Crucially, their junior netball contingent was thriving, with teams participating in the Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s, and Under 17s competitions, all on the same day.

However, the BFNL also runs Under 14s and Under 16s football competitions on Sundays. Woady Yaloak has historically struggled to field an Under 16s football team and, last season, was unable to muster enough players for an Under 14s side. It is this specific deficiency in junior football numbers that the BFNL has cited as the reason for barring all of Woady Yaloak’s junior football and netball teams from participating in the upcoming season.

The league defended its decision by stating its “responsibility to all member clubs to ensure competitions are structured in a way that avoids uneven draws, excessive byes, potential forfeits and ongoing fixture disruptions.” This rationale has been met with strong opposition from those involved with the Woady Yaloak club.

The Impact on Young Athletes

Stacey Rouhan, the secretary of Woady Yaloak Football Netball Club, expressed her dismay at the league’s decision, arguing that the issue of fixture disruption was overstated. “We played without an under 14s [football team] last year, so we know the fixture is doable,” Ms Rouhan stated. She acknowledged that the league’s decision would impact approximately 70 junior footballers, who may have the option to seek places with other clubs.

The real crisis, however, lies with the club’s junior netballers. “However Woady Yaloak’s 80-plus junior netballers will likely have to sit out the season,” Ms Rouhan lamented. “They have nowhere to go. The other teams have had try-outs and they’re now closed and at capacity.”

Ms Rouhan highlighted the club’s proactive approach, revealing that they had presented the BFNL with various solutions, including assisting their footballers in finding alternative clubs while allowing the netballers to remain. “In terms of growth, netball is exceeding out here,” she emphasised. “We entered two more netball teams this year.” She also pointed out that many junior clubs across the league grapple with low football numbers, and Woady Yaloak had been transparent about their situation.

A Call for Fair Play and Investigation

Cathy Tischler, whose daughter is among the netballers facing an uncertain season, has taken her concerns directly to the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. She described herself as “absolutely gutted” by what she perceives as the league’s disregard for the dedication of Woady Yaloak’s junior netballers.

“This warrants an investigation around how the decision was made, and if gender was appropriately taken into consideration, because we have plenty of netballers at Woady Yaloak,” Ms Tischler asserted. “I would really like the BFNL to reconsider their decision … and we’d like to see Netball Victoria to do something as well, as many of us are members.”

A spokesperson for the BFNL commented on the complexity of operating a dual-sport league, suggesting that separating football and netball components would be “very difficult.” They cited the potential for split fixtures and the logistical challenge of forcing other clubs to play at different venues on the same day, disrupting the current model of having all teams co-located. Despite the difficult outcome, the BFNL acknowledged Woady Yaloak’s efforts and the participation challenges faced by many regional clubs.

Netball Victoria has also weighed in, stating that they are “working closely with the Woady Yaloak Football Netball Club to ensure these junior players have a competition to go to.” A spokesperson indicated that an announcement regarding a resolution would be made soon.

Political Support for Inclusivity

The controversy has garnered attention from local politicians. Martha Haylett, the Labor MP for Ripon, has expressed her outrage, condemning the league’s decision to “kill the whole club at the eleventh hour.” She noted that other clubs facing similar football participation issues have been permitted to continue.

“There are some other options for boys to play football … but all the other clubs are full with netball because we know so many girls and women are playing now and love it,” Ms Haylett commented, highlighting the booming popularity of netball among young women.

A spokesperson for the Victorian Government reiterated their commitment to promoting gender equality in community sport. While acknowledging that the BFNL’s decision falls within the league’s purview, they encouraged the league to “continue working with all parties to find a solution to support inclusive participation.” This statement signals the government’s desire to see a resolution that prioritises equitable opportunities for all young athletes, regardless of their chosen sport.
