Rising Concerns Over Terror Threats in the US
A recent incident involving two teenagers who attempted to carry out an explosive attack in New York City has raised concerns about potential terror threats across the United States. The event, which occurred during an anti-Islam protest, involved the use of a homemade bomb that was thrown towards police officers. This incident has led to increased scrutiny and warnings from law enforcement officials.
The Attack and Its Implications
Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, were arrested on March 7 after throwing what they called a “Mother of Satan” explosive device near the mayor’s mansion in Manhattan. Both individuals have been indicted on multiple charges, including attempting to use weapons of mass destruction and supporting a terrorist organization. If convicted, they could face life in prison.
During their arrest, Kayumi reportedly stated that ISIS was behind the attack, while Balat claimed he had pledged allegiance to the terrorist group. These statements highlight the growing concern over radicalization and the potential for similar attacks in the future.

Expert Warnings and the Need for Vigilance
Retired NYPD Deputy Inspector Raymond Festino, a 30-year veteran of the department, has warned that the threat of terrorism is not confined to any one area. He emphasized the importance of being vigilant and aware of one’s surroundings, particularly in crowded public spaces such as subway stations and Times Square.
Festino noted that people often become distracted by their phones, making them vulnerable targets. He explained that if individuals are unaware of their surroundings, they risk becoming victims of crime or terrorism. He advised everyone to remain alert and know the exits in case of an emergency.

Steps to Stay Safe During Emergencies
In the event of a terror attack, Festino outlined several key steps that individuals should take to ensure their safety. First, it is crucial to move away from the danger and find a safe location. Once safe, individuals should assess their own condition before helping others who may be injured.
Reporting the incident to the authorities as soon as possible is also essential. Festino stressed the importance of providing accurate information, such as the exact location of the event, a description of the suspects, and the direction they were last seen moving in. This information can be vital for law enforcement in identifying and apprehending those responsible.

The Role of Technology in Safety
Festino also highlighted the importance of having a cell phone on hand during emergencies. A mobile device can be used to communicate with authorities and record events, which may provide valuable evidence for investigations. However, he cautioned against sharing footage on social media, emphasizing that it should be directed to the police instead.
Legal Consequences and Explosive Materials
The explosive device used by Kayumi and Balat contained triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a substance linked to previous ISIS attacks, including the 2015 Paris attacks. Authorities have confirmed that the device included duct-taped nuts and bolts, along with a hobby fuse connected to an M80-type firework.
Both men face additional charges related to carrying explosives, transporting explosive materials, and unlawful possession of destructive devices. These charges underscore the seriousness of their actions and the potential dangers posed by homemade explosives.
Ongoing Threats and International Context
While there is currently no publicly confirmed domestic terror plot, experts like Jen Gavito, a former diplomat and Pentagon adviser, have warned about the potential for attacks by Iran. She highlighted the country’s preference for deniable, indirect attacks, including cyber intrusions and overseas bombings. These tactics pose a significant threat to Americans and require continued vigilance and preparedness.
