Opetaia’s World Title Status Hangs in the Balance Amidst Boxing Politics
Australia’s undisputed cruiserweight champion, Jai Opetaia, has found himself at the centre of a significant boxing political storm following his dominant performance in Las Vegas. While Opetaia delivered a masterclass in his US debut, pulverising Brandon Glanton to maintain his undefeated record at 30-0, the fight’s sanctioning by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) has thrown his world title status into question.
This bout marked Opetaia’s first under the banner of Zuffa Boxing, the new venture launched by UFC president Dana White, a move known for its disruptive intentions within the traditional boxing landscape. The IBF had initially indicated that Opetaia would be stripped of his world title if the fight proceeded, a decision that has now been placed under review.
A Title in Jeopardy
The IBF’s stance stemmed from assurances they believed had been broken by Zuffa Boxing. The organisation had previously stripped Opetaia of his title once before, in 2023, for participating in an unsanctioned bout. However, they had reversed their initial decision to sanction the fight against Glanton shortly before the event. This reversal occurred after IBF officials concluded that Zuffa had not upheld promises that their inaugural world championship fight would be a ceremonial event rather than a contest for an actual world title.
Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing was established with the explicit aim of challenging the established order of professional boxing, with White himself openly stating that his organisation would not necessarily recognise the sport’s traditional governing bodies. Despite this, Opetaia was seen parading the IBF belt both before and after his commanding victory over Glanton.
Opetaia’s Plea for Clarity
In the aftermath of his win, Opetaia expressed his uncertainty regarding his standing with the IBF. He consistently voiced his ambition to unify the cruiserweight division and hoped for a swift resolution to the “nonsense,” asserting that the dispute was not of his making.
His candidness and clear desire to compete for undisputed status seemingly resonated with the IBF leadership. As of Wednesday (AEDT), the organisation confirmed that Opetaia’s cruiserweight world championship status “remains in deliberation.”
In a statement, the IBF explained their reconsideration: “Jai Opetaia made comments during the post-fight press conference that have led the organisation’s leadership to question whether he was made completely and fully aware by his advisors of the decisions he needed to make when committing to the bout against Brandon Glanton. The organisation intends to look further into this matter.”
Disputed Communications and Financial Matters
The IBF statement also shed light on the communication breakdowns surrounding the fight’s sanctioning. It indicated that while Opetaia’s long-time manager, Mick Francis of Tasman Fighters, was involved in initial discussions with the IBF, he was reportedly not privy to the crucial conversations in the days leading up to the fight that ultimately led to the withdrawal of the sanction.
Furthermore, the IBF refuted claims made by Dana White post-fight regarding a sanctioning fee. The organisation stated that the $US73,000 fee had been promptly returned once the sanction was withdrawn. They also denied suggestions that their decision not to sanction the bout was a result of feeling disrespected by the manner in which the IBF belt was displayed in the lead-up to the fight.
