Golf’s Rising Tide in Osun: A Celebration of a Former Governor and a Vision for the Future
The landscape of golf in Nigeria’s Osun State is experiencing a significant surge, marked by a recent celebratory event that brought together sports enthusiasts, dignitaries, and the very figures driving this development. At the heart of this occasion was Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governor of Osun State, who not only expressed his deep-seated affection for the sport but also lauded its burgeoning presence within the state.
Oyinlola, a passionate golfer himself, declared that his connection to the game is so profound that “only death could separate him from golf.” This sentiment underscores his unwavering commitment to not only continue playing but also to actively invest in golf and other sporting endeavours. His remarks were made during a special commemorative golf tournament organised in his honour to celebrate his 75th birthday.
The prestigious event was hosted at the expansive Ile-Ogbo Golf Course and Resort, and the LanreLeke Sports Academy, both located in Ile-Ogbo, Osun State. The visionary behind these facilities is Olanrewaju Adeleke, whose dedication to advancing sports infrastructure in the region was a central theme of the celebration.
During the tournament, Prince Oyinlola seized the opportunity to advocate for a renewed sense of national unity. He called for peace, solidarity, and collective action among all Nigerians, emphasizing that “all hands must be on deck” to foster the progress of Osun State and Nigeria as a whole. He also took a moment to express his sincere gratitude to Mr. Adeleke for establishing such a significant sporting edifice in Osun. Oyinlola described the facility as a potent source of motivation for golfers and sports aficionados across the state.
“I am happy that I belong to the golf family, and only death can come between me and the game,” Oyinlola stated, highlighting the profound personal connection he shares with golf. “That is why I must sincerely appreciate the founder of LanreLeke Sports Academy and Ile-Ogbo Golf Course for bringing this facility here to our dear state. Through this, he has further motivated many golfers and sports enthusiasts.”
He further acknowledged Adeleke’s commitment to celebrating his milestone birthday with the golf tournament, noting Adeleke’s promise to continue such engagements. “No doubt, he is a kind man. I thank him for setting this up here. I am optimistic that this edifice will eventually produce world stars in the game of golf,” he added, looking towards the future potential of the academy.
A Visionary’s Commitment to Sports Development
Olanrewaju Adeleke, in his address, painted Prince Oyinlola as a “shining light and symbol of the game of golf in the country.” He commended the former governor’s substantial contributions to the broader growth and development of sports within Osun State and beyond its borders.
Adeleke also unveiled ambitious plans for the continued infrastructural enhancement of both the LanreLeke Sports Academy and the Ile-Ogbo Golf Course. He extended a powerful call to action to the public and the organised private sector, urging them to adopt a more deliberate and sustained approach to investing in sports development.
“Without sounding immodest, we have one of the best golf courses in Nigeria, and you can verify this from the professionals,” Adeleke asserted, underscoring the quality of the existing facilities. He elaborated on the vision for the resort, stating, “We intend to improve on that by making it a tourist destination and putting the necessary facilities in place.”
The progress already made was evident, with Adeleke noting, “If you were here last year and you are here now, you would have noticed a remarkable difference in terms of development.” He detailed a comprehensive “10-year development plan” that the academy is committed to adhering to. “As part of the plan, we have completed four years, and we still have six years to further improve the facilities,” he revealed, outlining a clear roadmap for future expansion and enhancement.
The celebratory golf tournament attracted a distinguished gathering of golfers from various regions across Nigeria, all converging to honour Prince Oyinlola and witness the strides being made in Osun’s sporting scene. Attendees included numerous dignitaries who echoed the sentiments of admiration for Oyinlola, hailing him as a beacon of hope and an inspiring figure for generations, both young and old. The event served as a powerful testament to the growing influence of golf and the dedication of individuals like Olanrewaju Adeleke in shaping Nigeria’s sporting future.
