Unraveling the Mysteries of “Heaven and Nature”: A Deep Dive into Parker’s Past and a Shocking Return
The midseason finale of NCIS, titled “Heaven and Nature,” delivered a double dose of revelations, bringing closure to the haunting mystery of a young girl named Lily and the true circumstances surrounding the death of Alden Parker’s mother, Eleanor. These long-simmering plotlines, which began with Parker’s unsettling hallucinations of Lily in the Season 21 finale, were masterfully woven together before the show’s hiatus, with Season 23 set to resume in early 2026.
While the resolution of Parker’s personal history provided a significant emotional payoff, it was the episode’s stunning final moments that truly left audiences reeling. A beloved character, long thought gone, has unexpectedly resurfaced, adding a new layer of intrigue to the NCIS universe. But before we delve into that seismic twist, let’s unpack the complex and deeply personal journey Parker undertook to uncover the truth about his mother.
The Truth Behind Eleanor Parker’s Demise
The episode kicked off with Jimmy Palmer revealing his suspicion that Eleanor Parker might have been murdered. This revelation prompted Parker to grant Jimmy permission to exhume his mother’s body in a desperate bid for answers. The exhumation confirmed the murder theory, but a subsequent DNA test by Kasie revealed a shocking twist: the remains examined were not Eleanor Parker’s. Instead, they belonged to an unidentified woman who was present at the scene of a drunk driving accident in 1972, an accident that had previously served as the official explanation for Eleanor’s disappearance.
Seeking clarity, Parker and Jessica Knight tracked down Lester Burm, the Illinois state trooper who filed the original accident report. Initially, Burm appeared to have significant memory issues, claiming little recollection of the fateful night. However, as the investigation deepened, it became clear that his memory loss was a deliberate facade.

Meanwhile, Jimmy and Kasie utilized advanced facial reconstruction software on the skull of the mystery woman. With Knight’s keen observation, they added green eyes to the digital likeness, which Knight recognized as bearing a striking resemblance to a photograph of Lester Burm’s wife she had seen in his trailer. The plot thickened when DNA analysis revealed a 48% match between the mystery woman and the individual who had left lipstick on a wine glass in Parker’s apartment shortly before his father, Roman, was murdered.
The narrative twisted further as it was revealed that Lester Burm’s wife, Donna, who had died years prior, was not the same woman depicted in the photograph. The woman in the picture was his first wife, Judy, whom Lester had kept hidden from official records. The photograph itself was a cropped version of a larger image, which, when fully revealed, showed Lester and Judy with their daughter… Lily.
Lester initially claimed that Judy had taken Lily, whom he referred to as Nellie, when she left him, and that he had been searching for his daughter ever since. However, the truth proved to be far more sinister. Parker and Knight eventually located “Penelope Johnson” in Wilmington, and Parker was finally reunited with Lily, who was now an adult. He also met Lily’s granddaughter, Eleanor, who bore a striking resemblance to her great-grandmother.
The full, tragic story unfolded: Parker and Lily had been childhood playmates while their mothers, Eleanor Parker and Lily’s mother, were close. Eleanor discovered that Judy was being subjected to abuse by Lester Burm. Recognizing the danger and the inability to rely on the authorities due to Lester’s position, Eleanor and Judy concocted a plan to hide Judy and Lily at the home of Eleanor’s second cousin in Pittsburgh.
Tragically, Lester discovered their plan. While Eleanor and Judy were briefly separated, Lester abducted Lily. After dropping Parker off at home, unaware of the unfolding events, Eleanor and Judy set out in Eleanor’s car to retrieve Lily. Lester, however, forced them off the road in a staged accident. Eleanor managed to escape, but Lester used the crash as a cover to murder Judy. Eleanor was then able to discreetly retrieve Lily from the crash site. However, Lester tracked them to a motel, dragging Eleanor away while Lily managed to remain hidden.
Fortunately, Connie, Eleanor’s second cousin, found Lily and ensured she remained hidden from Lester. The lingering question remained: what happened to Eleanor Parker? Parker, determined to find her, employed more forceful interrogation tactics on Lester in an NCIS interrogation room, with the security cameras disabled. The man, who had been feigning cognitive impairment, finally confessed, revealing that he had disposed of Eleanor’s body and her car in a small pond outside Toledo, Ohio.
A Familiar Face Returns: The Season 23 Midseason Finale’s Shocking Climax
While the resolution of Parker’s maternal tragedy would have been a fitting conclusion to the midseason break, NCIS had one more monumental surprise in store. Throughout Season 23, Jessica Knight had been undergoing training for NCIS Elite. At the funeral for Eleanor Parker, Director Leon Vance summoned Knight, assigning her her very first mission. Her target? None other than Emily Wickersham’s character, Eleanor Bishop, who was then revealed to be discreetly observing the funeral from a distance.
This unexpected return sent shockwaves through the fandom. Speculation about Wickersham’s potential reappearance had been circulating, but her return in such a pivotal and mysterious capacity was a masterstroke. Bishop had departed the flagship series in the Season 18 finale, having seemingly quit NCIS and damaged her reputation as part of a deep-cover operation for Odette Malone, an associate of Ziva David. This reveal echoes the dramatic resurfacing of Ziva David in the Season 16 finale, leaving fans eager for answers.
The implications of Bishop’s return are immense. Will the details of her undercover mission finally be revealed? What has she been doing since her departure? What are NCIS Elite’s objectives concerning her? And the burning question for many fans: will Bishop and Nick Torres finally reunite? As the series heads into its hiatus, audiences are left to ponder these questions, with NCIS slated to return on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, alongside NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney.
