Priyanka Chopra Jonas Opens Up on Marriage Scrutiny and Nick Jonas’s Sincerity
Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the globally recognised Indian actor, has recently shed light on the intense public scrutiny that plagued her marriage to American singer Nick Jonas, particularly in the initial stages of their relationship. The couple, who tied the knot in December 2018, faced relentless speculation, often amplified by their notable 10-year age difference. Chopra Jonas, now 41, candidly admitted that this constant barrage of gossip was deeply upsetting.
“We’re eight years in,” she stated in a recent interview with Variety, addressing the online chatter suggesting their marriage was on the verge of collapse. “If people want to keep waiting for it to implode, that’s their choice. I stopped thinking about it.”
Their union followed a whirlwind six-month romance that began after they first met in May 2018. The couple have since welcomed a daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas, who was born in January 2022.
Chopra Jonas reflected on the cultural and personal differences that seemed to ignite public fascination and, at times, criticism. “I don’t know what was it about us that rubbed people the wrong way,” she mused. “I think there was the intercultural nature of it – different countries, different religions, age gap. It was very hurtful. And we both, instead of looking out, just sort of looked at each other, and we were like, ‘It doesn’t matter.’ So it’s like water off a duck’s back now.”
The Citadel star’s journey to finding a stable and supportive partnership was not without its own introspection. Prior to meeting Jonas, she revealed she had taken a significant two-year hiatus from dating. This period of self-imposed solitude was crucial for her to understand and address recurring patterns in her relationships.
“I needed to know why I kept on repeating my mistakes,” she shared with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2023. Her primary realisation was a tendency to prioritise her partners’ needs above her own. “The mistake [was] always feeling like I need to be the caretaker, always feeling like it’s always OK to cancel my job, my work, my meeting or my priority to prop him up.”
This pattern shifted dramatically upon meeting Nick Jonas. Chopra Jonas was initially surprised by the rapid progression of their relationship, admitting a degree of disbelief in the early days of their marriage. “We got married really quick, within six months of meeting,” she recalled. “When I first married him, I didn’t know if it was even real. This part of him. Because I was like, ‘This is crazy. This is put on.’”
However, Jonas’s genuine nature quickly dispelled any doubts. “But Nick has this absolute sincerity. It inspires me every day in a profession which requires you to pivot and become whatever you need to put on. He’s constantly sincere.” This sincerity, she emphasised, is a source of daily inspiration, particularly within an industry that often demands constant adaptation and performance.
The actor elaborated on how Jonas’s supportive nature contrasts with her previous relationship dynamics. Far from being a drain on her ambition, he actively encourages her professional pursuits. “He thrives in seeing me shine; he is the most excited about the shows I’m doing,” she stated, highlighting his enthusiastic support for her career.
