While Manchester United’s interim manager, Michael Carrick, has been lauded for his “excellent job” in steering the club up the Premier League table, a permanent appointment remains firmly under wraps. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos chief and a significant figure at Old Trafford, has offered high praise for Carrick’s performance but is keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the former England international’s long-term prospects.
Carrick stepped into the managerial hot seat on a temporary basis following the departure of Ruben Amorim in January. What was initially envisioned as a short-term fix has, however, blossomed into a surprisingly successful spell. Under Carrick’s guidance, the Red Devils have seen a considerable uplift in their league position, now finding themselves in a strong contention for a coveted Champions League qualification spot.

The team’s impressive run, which saw them go unbeaten for seven games, was only recently broken by a late defeat away at Newcastle. Despite this setback, Carrick has undeniably aced his audition, demonstrating a capability that many believe makes him a strong candidate for the permanent managerial role.
When questioned about Carrick’s impact during the Chinese Grand Prix, where Ratcliffe was present as a part-owner of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, the Ineos chairman was effusive. “He’s doing an excellent job. Yeah, absolutely,” Ratcliffe told Sky Sports. However, when pressed further on the likelihood of Carrick being retained beyond the current season, Ratcliffe offered a firm refusal to comment. “Not going there,” he asserted, leaving the future of the interim manager shrouded in uncertainty.
A Shadow of Controversy
Ratcliffe’s comments on Carrick come in the wake of a period of controversy for the billionaire himself. Last month, he faced significant backlash for remarks he made regarding the United Kingdom being “colonised by immigrants.” These comments were swiftly condemned by prominent political figures.
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described Ratcliffe’s statements as “offensive.”
- Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also weighed in, criticising the Ineos tycoon for what he deemed “insulting, inflammatory and incorrect” remarks.
In response to the controversy, Manchester United issued a statement that, while not directly naming Ratcliffe, emphasised the club’s pride in being an “inclusive and welcoming club.” This statement was followed by Carrick himself addressing the matter, expressing his pride in the diverse culture at Manchester United.
Carrick stated, “Sir Jim made his statement and the club made a statement on the back of it. It is not my place to add to that. Enough has been said in that regard.” He then went on to highlight the club’s global impact and its responsibility, elaborating on the inclusive environment he has witnessed throughout his long association with the club.
Carrick’s Pride in Club Culture
Carrick further articulated his deep-seated pride in the club’s ethos:
“What I can say is that I have been around this club many years and we always make a huge impact globally and we are really responsible for that. Throughout the years, as a player and member of staff and as a supporter, we are really proud of the environment and culture we’ve got at the club.
Equality and diversity and respect for each other is something we look to carry through every day. I have travelled the world and know what this club means to an awful lot of people. I am fully aware of the responsibility and we try to carry that out every day. I am proud of what the club stands for and has done for so long.”
Carrick’s measured response and his affirmation of the club’s values have been well-received, particularly given the sensitive nature of Ratcliffe’s prior comments. His focus remains firmly on the team’s performance and the positive culture he champions within the club, even as questions about his own managerial future linger. The coming weeks will likely shed more light on whether his impressive interim spell will translate into a permanent role at the helm of Manchester United.
