Overnight, Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles upon Ukraine, coinciding with scheduled discussions between Kyiv and Washington concerning potential avenues for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Moscow launched a staggering 653 drones and 51 missiles, triggering widespread air raid alerts throughout the nation. Ukrainian forces claimed to have successfully intercepted and neutralised 585 drones and 30 missiles.
President Zelenskyy confirmed that 29 locations were targeted, resulting in injuries to at least eight individuals, including three in the capital city of Kyiv. In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy detailed the extent of the damage: “There have also been strikes on industrial facilities and residential buildings in the Kyiv region. The Dnipro, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Volyn, and Mykolaiv regions were also affected.”
Zelenskyy highlighted that energy infrastructure was the primary focus of the assault. He also noted that a key railway station in Fastiv was struck, an act he deemed “meaningless from a military point of view,” asserting that Moscow “could not have been unaware of this.”
In a parallel announcement, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that its air defenses had intercepted 116 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory between Friday night and Saturday morning.
According to reports from the Russian Telegram news channel Astra, Ukraine targeted the Ryazan Oil Refinery within Russia.
Pavel Malkov, the regional governor, acknowledged that a residential building sustained damage due to the drone attack. He also confirmed that drone debris landed at an industrial facility. However, he made no mention of the oil refinery.
Ukraine has recently increased its attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, which Kyiv alleges is a crucial source of funding for Moscow’s ongoing invasion. This intensification is seen as an attempt to pressure the Kremlin into ceasing hostilities and engaging in genuine peace negotiations.
Conversely, Russia frequently targets Ukraine’s energy grid, with the aim of depriving the country of essential resources like heat, electricity, and running water, particularly during the harsh winter months.
