Shirley Ballas in Tears Over Shock Strictly Elimination
The usually stoic head judge of the BBC’s hit dance competition, Strictly Come Dancing, Shirley Ballas, has revealed the profound emotional toll of a recent elimination. Lewis Cope, a firm favourite and considered a strong contender for the Glitterball trophy, was unexpectedly sent home during the quarter-final’s Musicals Week results show. The decision, which saw Lewis and his professional partner Katya Jones face off against Amber Davies and Nikita Kuzmin, left fans stunned and sparked considerable debate.
The elimination was particularly hard-hitting for the judging panel. Shirley Ballas admitted to being deeply affected, even breaking down in tears. “I was crying, Motsi was crying, we went upstairs – both the boys also,” she confessed, describing the difficult decision-making process. The sight of two such talented dancers in the bottom two was, in her words, “heart-wrenching.”
A Dance-Off That Broke Hearts
Lewis Cope, the 30-year-old Emmerdale star, and his partner Katya Jones, 36, found themselves in the dreaded dance-off after their vibrant salsa to “Dance at the Gym” from West Side Story. While the routine scored a respectable 35 points from the judges, placing them joint second on the leaderboard alongside other couples, it wasn’t enough to secure their passage to the semi-final.
The other couple in the bottom two, Amber Davies and Nikita Kuzmin, had themselves delivered a stellar performance, even topping the leaderboard earlier in the night. The judges – Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke, and Motsi Mabuse – ultimately opted to save Amber and Nikita, citing their performance in the dance-off as the deciding factor.

The Emotional Aftermath
The intensity of the decision clearly resonated with the judges. Shirley Ballas elaborated on the emotional impact during an appearance on the companion show, It Takes Two. She shared with host Fleur East that she and fellow judge Motsi Mabuse had spent time “consoling each other” in the aftermath. The weight of the decision was so significant that it even impacted Shirley’s sleep.
When asked about her readiness for the upcoming semi-final, Shirley admitted, “Well I didn’t sleep yesterday, I didn’t sleep when Lewis got eliminated. I probably won’t sleep tonight because everything is… you never know where the show is going to go now at the moment, it’s not set, it could be anyone who goes home and anyone who can win.” This sentiment highlights the unpredictable nature of the competition at this late stage and the emotional investment the judges have in the dancers.
Fan Outrage and Partner’s Regret
The elimination of Lewis and Katya was met with widespread disbelief and disappointment from the show’s dedicated fanbase. Many took to social media to express their frustration, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) labelling them “the most robbed couple in the history of this show.” Another fan described the thought of them leaving before showcasing their planned routines as “nauseous and ill.”
The professional partner, Katya Jones, also appeared visibly distressed. On It Takes Two, she broke down in tears, grappling with the possibility that she might have contributed to their premature exit. She expressed self-doubt, wondering if she could have “done things differently to make it work for him better.”
Lewis, however, was quick to reassure Katya, insisting that she had “did everything perfect.” He acknowledged the challenging position they found themselves in, noting that they were often expected to deliver “almost perfect showstopping routines every single Saturday.”
A Tightly Contested Competition
The unexpected departure of Lewis Cope has undoubtedly added another layer of drama to an already fiercely contested Strictly Come Dancing season. With the semi-final looming, the competition remains wide open, and the judges’ decisions are under even greater scrutiny. The emotional resonance of this particular elimination underscores the deep connection the audience and the judges form with the contestants throughout their journey.

Strictly Come Dancing continues its run on BBC One next Saturday at 6:35pm.
