A four-year-old girl from Southern California has suffered severe damage to her esophagus after accidentally swallowing a button battery from one of her toys. The incident highlights the dangers that small, seemingly harmless objects can pose to young children.
Camila Romero was initially taken to the doctor by her parents due to a persistent fever that lasted for a week. At first, medical professionals suspected a viral infection. However, this assumption was quickly challenged when Camila’s mother, Cassandra Tafolla, requested a test for pneumonia. It was during a chest X-ray that the battery was discovered lodged in the child’s throat.
Tafolla and Camila’s father, Hugo Romero, are unsure exactly when their daughter ingested the battery. However, they now understand the severity of the situation. “It burned a hole in her esophagus,” Tafolla explained to KTLA. “The area where it burned is really close to where our lungs part. From the hole to her lungs, it’s only about an eighth of an inch from each other.”
The Dangers of Button Batteries
Button batteries, also known as coin batteries, are small, round, and flat. They are commonly found in a variety of devices, including watches, hearing aids, remote controls, key fobs, and children’s toys. Despite their size, these batteries can be extremely dangerous if swallowed.
This is because they contain lithium, which can trigger a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with saliva or other bodily fluids. This reaction can cause severe burns within just two hours. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Camila.
Doctors at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital were able to remove the battery, but the damage caused to her throat and upper respiratory system was extensive. As a result, Camila had to be placed in a medically-induced coma.
Ongoing Medical Challenges
Camila has been in a coma for the past two weeks and remains in critical condition. Her parents have expressed their deep concern and frustration over the incident, as they had never heard of the dangers posed by button batteries before this event.
“We had no idea about the risks,” Tafolla said. “Now we understand how dangerous they can be. They’re shiny and small enough for kids to swallow without realizing the danger.”
The family is urging other parents to remain vigilant and supervise their children closely, especially when playing with toys that may contain these batteries. They hope to schedule Camila’s next surgery in the coming week, provided that the doctors approve the procedure.

In addition to the medical challenges, Camila’s family is also facing significant financial strain. To help alleviate some of the burden, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been created. The goal is to assist the family with medical bills and provide them with a financial cushion while they take time off work to care for Camila.
