Sydney Airport’s Terminal 1: More Than Just a Gateway, It’s a Destination
Sydney Airport’s International Terminal, Terminal 1, is undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond its traditional role as merely an arrival and departure point. The focus is on enhancing the passenger experience through a series of practical, yet impactful, additions and upgrades, catering to a wider range of needs and desires.
The most striking recent developments are clustered in the International Arrivals area, offering travellers and those meeting them a suite of convenient self-care services. Barber’s Lounge has already opened its doors, providing haircuts and grooming for arriving passengers, airport staff, and those eagerly awaiting reunions. This is soon to be joined by a 300-square-metre Anytime Fitness gym, set to launch on Monday, March 30. Sydney Airport proudly claims this will be Australia’s first airport-based gym of its kind, offering a dedicated fitness space within the terminal itself. While Melbourne Airport has a fitness club located at its hotel precinct, it’s not directly within the terminal complex. Adding to the burgeoning self-care hub, a ProfessioNail salon is also anticipated to open its doors later this year.
Crucially, all three of these new amenities – the barber, the gym, and the nail salon – are situated on the public, landside of Terminal 1. This means access is not restricted to ticketed passengers; anyone can utilise these services. Barber’s Lounge is strategically located within the International Arrivals hall, conveniently placed for passengers as they emerge from customs into the bustling public concourse. The ProfessioNail salon will also be found in this arrivals zone, nestled amongst the familiar shops and cafes where friends and family often gather to greet loved ones. The Anytime Fitness gym, while slightly further from the immediate arrivals exit, is located on the ground level of Terminal 1, offering easy access to transport connections, including the train station.
While each of these individual additions might seem like small conveniences, their collective presence signals a deliberate strategy to reposition Sydney Airport’s Terminal 1. It’s no longer just an exit point; it’s evolving into a destination in its own right. These personal care services are the latest chapter in a broader narrative of enhancement, which includes a revitalised food and beverage scene and expanded retail offerings, all underpinned by significant infrastructure upgrades.
The retail landscape at Terminal 1 has also seen recent improvements, with the addition of a Victoria’s Secret Beauty boutique. This new store specialises in fragrances, cosmetics, and travel-sized products, catering to a discerning traveller. The established duty-free giant, Heinemann, continues to be a cornerstone of the departures shopping experience, having taken over Sydney Airport’s international retail concession in 2015. Their expansive duty-free stores remain a key attraction for international travellers.
The culinary offerings have also been diversified over the past year, with several new dining venues gracing Terminal 1. These include EARL, BARista, East x West, and Sydney Coffee Trader, adding to existing popular spots like Hudsons Coffee and Coopers Alehouse. This expansion aims to provide a wider array of choices to suit diverse tastes and schedules.
Beyond the passenger-facing enhancements, Sydney Airport is also making substantial investments in the operational systems that facilitate smooth passenger flow. The introduction of new SmartGate kiosks in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall is a key initiative designed to expedite immigration processing, particularly during peak travel times. Furthermore, the international security screening area has been upgraded with state-of-the-art CT-scanning technology. This, coupled with an increase in screening lanes, is intended to boost capacity and significantly reduce the inconvenience of passengers needing to remove liquids and aerosols from their carry-on baggage.
These ongoing developments at Terminal 1 occur against the backdrop of a significant shift in Sydney’s aviation landscape. The much-anticipated opening of Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek this year signals the arrival of a second major gateway for the city, poised to gradually absorb a growing portion of Sydney’s air traffic.
Despite the emergence of this new facility, Sydney Airport’s Terminal 1 is set to retain its position as the primary international hub in the immediate future. To solidify its long-term vision and manage anticipated passenger growth, Sydney Airport is in the final stages of developing its Master Plan 2045. This comprehensive plan outlines the airport’s strategies for terminal upgrades, enhancing transport connections, and managing passenger flows over the coming decades. The plan is slated for submission to the federal government on March 31.
