A tragic incident at a rural campsite in New South Wales has resulted in a man being charged with murder and remanded in custody. The alleged stabbing occurred yesterday evening, leading to the death of another man.
Daniel Mark Kilkeary, a 43-year-old man, appeared in court today and did not apply for bail. The incident took place at a campsite located off Danglemah Road in Woolbrook, a locality situated approximately 66 kilometres north-east of Tamworth.
The Fatal Encounter
Police were alerted to the scene at around 6pm following reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they discovered an altercation between two men had taken place. It is alleged that during this confrontation, one man, believed to be in his 50s, sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest and neck.
Despite the efforts of NSW paramedics who attended the scene, the victim could not be saved and was pronounced deceased at the campsite. The identity of the deceased has not yet been formally confirmed.
Witness Accounts and Investigation
Detective Inspector Tom Aylett of the Oxley Police District indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with officers needing to speak with several witnesses. However, police are reportedly confident that a single individual was responsible for the alleged stabbing.
Inspector Aylett noted the time of the incident, stating, “At 6pm daylight savings time, it’s still quite bright during the day and yesterday wasn’t excessively hot either, so there were a number of people out and about.” This suggests that potential witnesses may have been present in the vicinity.
The investigation is also involving interstate collaboration. “We believe the deceased man has links to Queensland, and so detectives and the Queensland homicide [unit] are assisting New South Wales,” Inspector Aylett added. This indicates that the victim may have resided or had significant connections in Queensland.
Authorities have confirmed that the two men involved in the incident were known to each other. Mr Kilkeary was apprehended by police at the scene. A knife, believed to be the weapon used in the alleged crime, was also seized by law enforcement.
Unanswered Questions and Future Proceedings
As the investigation progresses, the motive behind the alleged crime remains unclear and is yet to be revealed. Inspector Aylett expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “It’s a very sad day for another person who’s lost their life.” He further elaborated on the investigative focus: “The contact between the two people, their background, and the reason why this occurred is obviously something the investigators will look at over the next few days.”
During the court hearing, Mr Kilkeary’s defence solicitor, Osman Samin, made a request for his client to receive mental health support while in custody.
Daniel Mark Kilkeary is scheduled to make his next appearance before Tamworth Local Court in late April. The court proceedings will likely shed further light on the circumstances surrounding this fatal incident. The investigation is expected to continue in the coming weeks as authorities piece together the events that led to the tragic loss of life at the Woolbrook campsite.
