Thunderbirds Soar to Record Win Behind Sterling-Humphrey’s Defensive Masterclass
The Adelaide Thunderbirds have cemented their dominant start to the Super Netball season, extending their unbeaten run to a perfect 3-0 with a resounding 73-46 victory over the Queensland Firebirds. The match, held at Nissan Arena in Brisbane, saw the Thunderbirds deliver their most dominant performance in club history, securing their largest ever Super Netball win and leaving the Firebirds struggling at 0-3.
At the heart of this commanding performance was the exceptional defensive display from Jamaican import Shamera Sterling-Humphrey. The 30-year-old goalkeeper was a force to be reckoned with from the opening whistle, playing a pivotal role in the Thunderbirds’ blistering 21-9 opening-quarter onslaught. Sterling-Humphrey’s early dominance was a clear indicator of what was to come, as she single-handedly disrupted the Firebirds’ attacking rhythm.

Her impact in the first quarter was nothing short of spectacular, amassing an incredible five gains and four intercepts. This defensive pressure completely stifled the Firebirds’ shooting circle, forcing them into uncharacteristic errors. Queensland’s star goal shooter, Mary Cholhok, found herself largely ineffective, managing only five goals before being substituted early in the contest. The home side simply could not find a way to counter the relentless pressure applied by the Thunderbirds’ defence, particularly Sterling-Humphrey.
Despite a valiant effort from the Firebirds to stem the tide in the second and third quarters, the Thunderbirds maintained their composure and continued to build their lead. The final term saw Adelaide unleash another surge, outscoring Queensland 21-12 to seal the comprehensive victory. This win eclipses the Thunderbirds’ previous record victory of 26 goals against the Mavericks in 2024, underscoring the sheer dominance displayed in this latest outing.
“It feels good to still be away from home and be able to get over the line, so very proud of that,” Sterling-Humphrey commented after the match, reflecting on the team’s ability to perform under pressure on the road.
The offensive firepower of the Thunderbirds was equally impressive, with goal shooter Elmere van der Berg leading the charge. Van der Berg finished the match with a remarkable 44 goals, including four crucial Super Shots. Adding to the attacking threat, Lauren Frew maintained a perfect shooting record, converting all 12 of her attempts from regular range.
The Thunderbirds’ defensive unit as a whole was outstanding, accumulating a staggering 28 gains throughout the game. Sterling-Humphrey’s individual contribution was exceptional, with her tally of 13 gains, five intercepts, and six rebounds highlighting her all-around impact. She was well supported by goal defender Latanya Wilson, who also put in a stellar performance with seven gains and five intercepts.
For the Queensland Firebirds, the search for their first win of the season continues, and they now face an uphill battle to remain in contention for a finals spot. While Elsa Sif Sandholt, who replaced Cholhok in the shooting circle, showed flashes of brilliance with 18 goals and an impressive six Super Shots from seven attempts, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Thunderbirds’ relentless pressure. The Firebirds will need to regroup quickly and find solutions to their attacking and defensive inconsistencies if they are to turn their season around.
