Bhatia’s Emotional Arnold Palmer Invitational Victory: A Tribute to Niece Mia
In a display of profound emotion and remarkable resilience, American golfer Akshay Bhatia clinched his maiden PGA Tour signature event title at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational. The victory, secured in a thrilling playoff against Daniel Berger at the iconic Bay Hill course in Florida, was deeply personal, dedicated to his late niece, Mia. Bhatia, visibly moved, revealed in post-victory interviews that Mia’s memory and spirit fuelled his performance, helping him overcome the nearly two-year drought without a tour win.
The magnitude of the moment was palpable as Bhatia embraced his wife, Presleigh, on the 18th green. In a heartfelt conversation with NBC reporter Cara Banks, he shared the poignant reason behind his tears. “My niece passed away in December, and so I knew she was looking over me this year,” Bhatia stated, his voice thick with emotion. “You know, I made this win for her, for sure.”
Later, during his press conference, Bhatia elaborated on the heartbreaking circumstances and the special signs that reminded him of Mia. “When I saw that rainbow on 18, it reminded me of her so that was really cool, a special moment for us,” he recounted. Mia, he explained, was diagnosed with a rare disease and bravely fought for an extended period, defying initial prognoses of not surviving past her first birthday. A particularly touching memory for Bhatia was Mia’s presence at his wedding.

“It was really hard for her to travel… the day of our wedding she passed away and didn’t make it,” Bhatia shared, detailing the profound impact of that day. Despite the immense challenges, Mia experienced some beautiful moments in her final days. She stayed at a house aptly named “Heaven on Earth” where the wedding took place, enjoyed the beach, and had the chance to see her loved ones. Bhatia conveyed to his sister his continuous thoughts of Mia since her passing and reiterated that the victory was a dedication to her memory.

The significance of the win was amplified by the presence of Bhatia’s parents, who watched from the sidelines. This triumph marks not only his first in a signature event but also comes just days before one of the season’s most anticipated tournaments, The Players Championship. Bhatia had previously paid tribute to Mia on his Instagram in December, sharing cherished photos and heartfelt messages.
“Miss Mia had the best hair, the best smile, and was one of the strongest kids I know,” he wrote. “I will cherish her and play for her every single day. She meant the world to us and showed so much resilience each and every day. Fly high. I love you.” He concluded his post with an angel and love heart emoji, alongside the date of her passing, December 13th. While details of Mia’s condition remain private, she was the daughter of Bhatia’s only sister, Rhea.
A Family Legacy in Golf
The narrative of Bhatia’s golfing journey is intertwined with his family, particularly his father, Sonny. In an interview with the Raleigh News and Observer, Sonny revealed that his own passion for golf was ignited by Rhea, who is four years his senior. He recalled Akshay’s early desire to play, stating, “He wanted to play really badly at first but was too young. I said, ‘Watch your sister and your time will come.’ They’ve both been playing golf ever since. Both love golf.” This familial connection to the sport undoubtedly runs deep.

Bhatia’s Poised Performance and Gratitude
Reflecting on his win at Bay Hill, Bhatia expressed his deep respect for the tournament’s namesake, Arnold Palmer. “This event, to win for Mr Palmer, for what he’s done for this community, for this tournament,” he remarked. He acknowledged the formidable challenge presented by Bay Hill, renowned as one of golf’s toughest courses. “Everyone knows that when you show up to Bay Hill it’s going to be a test, to play one of the hardest golf courses and succeed is really cool,” Bhatia added, extending his gratitude to the tournament organisers and Calloway.

Bhatia’s ascent in the professional golf world has been marked by consistent, albeit narrow, victories. His previous two PGA Tour wins include the Barracuda Championship in July 2023 and the Valero Texas Open in April 2024. Notably, all three of his professional victories have been achieved in dramatic playoff finishes, underscoring his clutch performance under pressure. Sunday’s triumph at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was no different, as he mounted a remarkable two-shot comeback on the final day to force a playoff and ultimately secure the championship. This victory solidifies Bhatia’s position as a rising star in the golf world, carrying with him the memory of his beloved niece, Mia, in every swing.
