Alarming Surge in Wrong-Way Motorway Incidents Across England
Shocking figures have revealed a significant spike in wrong-way driver incidents on England’s motorways, with nearly 1,000 reported cases in the past year alone. This equates to a staggering average of around 20 dangerous encounters every single week, posing a grave threat to road users.
These alarming statistics encompass a range of perilous behaviours, including motorists mistakenly entering slip roads in the wrong direction, reversing on hard shoulders, and even attempting reckless U-turns. While the majority of these incidents are attributed to accidental errors, a concerning number involve drivers deliberately defying traffic flow, with incorrect satellite navigation directions often cited as a contributing factor.
National Highways, the body responsible for England’s motorway network, recorded a total of 922 reports of oncoming vehicles during the last year. Over a more extended four-year period, from 2022 to 2025, the number of such reports surged to a concerning 3,607.
Motorway Hotspots for Dangerous Driving
Analysis of the data highlights specific motorways that have experienced a higher frequency of these hazardous incidents:
- M1: This motorway emerged as the most problematic, with a substantial 480 incidents logged over the four-year period.
- M6: Following closely behind, the M6 recorded 417 wrong-way driver incidents.
- M25: The orbital motorway around London saw 333 reported cases, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.
These incidents are meticulously logged by National Highways’ operational centres, often following reports from the police, traffic officers, or concerned members of the public.
Tragic Consequences of Wrong-Way Driving
The statistics come to light in the wake of a deeply tragic inquest that exposed the devastating consequences of deliberate wrong-way driving. In a horrific incident on the M6 in Cumbria, former RAF pilot Richard Woods, 40, intentionally drove his vehicle the wrong way down the carriageway, resulting in his own death and the loss of four innocent lives.
During the inquest, it was revealed that Woods, who was over the legal alcohol limit, had pulled over onto the hard shoulder before executing a sudden and fatal U-turn. He narrowly avoided colliding with one vehicle before smashing head-on into a Toyota. The occupants of that car, Jaroslaw Rossa, 42, from Glasgow, his sons Filip, 15, and Dominic, seven, and his partner Jade McEnroe, 33, all tragically perished in the collision.
In another disturbing case, Barancan Nurcin, 23, was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in 2024 for causing a head-on crash on the M25. His reckless act of driving the wrong way around the motorway in a stolen van, in an attempt to evade police, led to the deaths of his passenger, Fahad Dek, 23, and Zoe Hawes, 36, who was travelling in the vehicle he struck. Zoe’s husband, Wayne, and the occupants of another car sustained serious injuries.
Calls for Urgent Action and Improved Safety Measures
Road safety organisations have expressed grave concern over the escalating figures and are calling for immediate measures to be implemented.
Jack Cousens, from the AA, stated: “The number of people driving the wrong way on the motorway is alarming and can be catastrophic should the worst happen. While numerous incidents are due to criminals trying to evade arrest, in many cases people are misinterpreting the directions on their sat-navs and making dangerous decisions.”
Simon Williams, of the RAC, echoed these sentiments, adding: “More has to be done to prevent this nightmare scenario, whether that’s clearer signage or a technological solution, as these figures show what we have currently isn’t clear enough.”

This may include enhanced and clearer signage on motorways, particularly at junctions and slip roads, as well as exploring technological advancements that could alert drivers to potential hazards or even automatically intervene in critical situations.
