Essendon’s Struggles and Signs of Progress
Essendon has shown some signs of improvement this season, but it might be too late to prevent the Bombers from experiencing their worst AFL losing streak. With four losses at the start of the season, they are now on a 17-game losing streak heading into their Gather Round match against Melbourne at Adelaide Oval.
Despite another poor start in their previous game, Essendon managed to rally against the Western Bulldogs and showed competitiveness in the second half. This small glimmer of hope suggests that the team is beginning to turn things around.
The Bombers have also been dealing with a significant number of injuries, but this issue seems to be easing. One of the most notable developments is Jordan Ridley making his first senior appearance of the season. Ridley only played 10 games last season due to hamstring injuries, so his return is a positive sign for the team.
Key forward Nate Caddy is set to return from concussion protocols, while Elijah Tsatas will play his first AFL game of the year. Additionally, top-10 draft pick Sullivan Robey is expected to make his senior debut. These developments could provide a much-needed boost to Essendon’s lineup.

A New Era for Essendon
Equally important is the fact that Essendon’s current squad includes players who have been regulars in the AFL, such as Archie Perkins and Matt Guelfi. Their absence has created more competition for senior positions, which could lead to stronger selection decisions.
Xavier Duursma, an Essendon utility player, expressed his excitement about Jordan Ridley’s return. “He’s one of my best mates at the club and he’s had a really tough road … with some of his injuries,” Duursma said. “He’s an elite ball user and an elite intercept defender, so it’s great to have him back.”
Duursma also mentioned that the team is experiencing a new level of competition for spots in the senior side. “It’s a good spot for the club to be in, to have selection ‘controversy’ and all stuff like that,” he added.

Looking Ahead
After spending five seasons at Port Adelaide, Duursma is now in his third year at Essendon. He is eager to build on the six finals appearances he made with the Power. “There’s still so much room for us to grow – we’re a young team … we’re pretty excited about what we can build,” he said.
Duursma is determined to be part of Essendon’s future success. “I just want to be a part of that and help us get there, because I know how much I enjoy winning,” he concluded. The Bombers may be facing a challenging season, but with the return of key players and a competitive squad, there is hope for a brighter future.
