Tragedy Strikes Melbourne Home: Young Boy Dies, Father Injured in Blaze
A devastating house fire in Melbourne’s west has claimed the life of a three-year-old boy, with his father critically injured after a desperate attempt to rescue him. The community is reeling from the loss of the young child, remembered for his vibrant spirit, as authorities work to uncover the cause of the blaze that ripped through the family’s Werribee home.
The tragic incident unfolded around midnight on Newbury Street, engulfing the single-storey brick veneer house in flames. The toddler, identified as Jordan Dashwood, was inside the home with his parents and a sibling when the fire broke out. Reports indicate that his father, 39-year-old Jeremy Dashwood, bravely attempted to save his son, reportedly smashing a window to re-enter the burning structure. Tragically, he emerged with his clothes alight and sustained serious burns.
An 11-year-old brother managed to escape the inferno by climbing through a window. Two older siblings were not present at the residence at the time of the fire. The family’s beloved dogs also perished in the devastating event.
Emergency services were alerted and arrived at the scene within a remarkable three minutes. However, the situation was chaotic, with initial reports suggesting multiple children were trapped inside. Firefighters, upon extinguishing the blaze, discovered the body of young Jordan. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Anthony Pearce described the scene as “very chaotic… quite tragic,” noting that firefighters had initially believed everyone had self-evacuated before they could conduct a thorough search.
An Investigation Underway
As dawn broke on Monday, the extent of the destruction was starkly evident. Large holes gaped in the sides of the house, revealing charred timber beams within the blackened structure. A child’s toy, a Nerf gun, lay near the front fence, now cordoned off with police tape.
The boy’s mother and grandmother were visibly distressed, receiving comfort from family and friends at a neighbouring property throughout the morning. Bianca Mizzi, a family friend who rushed to the scene, shared her profound sadness. She described Jordan as a “beautiful, but so cheeky” boy, recalling fond memories of his spirited personality. Mizzi learned of the fire via the VicEmergency app and drove to the street at 3 am, her worst fears confirmed upon seeing the scene.

A neighbour, Thang Zanniat, who lives opposite the family, was awakened by a series of loud bangs. He looked out his window to see “big flames” erupting from both sides of the house. He observed an ambulance already on site but no fire trucks had yet arrived. In an attempt to assist, he tried opening the front gate, but it proved inaccessible due to the intensity of the fire. He also directed his garden hose towards the flames, but it was insufficient to make a difference.
Mr. Zanniat recounted hearing the distressed cries of the lady saying, “My baby’s inside.” He expressed his deep regret at being unable to help further, stating, “I feel really upset, I really wanted to help, but I couldn’t do anything.” He witnessed a man emerge from the burning house with his clothes ablaze, later identified as Jordan’s father. Paramedics confirmed the father is receiving treatment at the Alfred Hospital for serious upper and lower body injuries and is in a stable condition.

Community Support and Ongoing Inquiry
The local community has rallied around the grieving family. A crowdfunding page has been established to help cover funeral costs for Jordan and provide temporary accommodation for his relatives. The page paints a poignant picture of a young life lost too soon.
Police have stated that the fire is not currently being treated as suspicious. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and origin of the blaze. Authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist their inquiry to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The loss of a young child is an unimaginable tragedy, and the bravery of a father’s attempt to save his son, despite the devastating consequences, underscores the profound love within the family. As the community mourns and supports one another, the focus remains on understanding how this horrific event occurred.
