South Korean Parliament to Convene Hearing on Coupang Data Breach
The Democratic Party of Korea has announced its intention to hold a comprehensive two-day hearing dedicated to addressing the significant personal information leak incident involving the e-commerce giant Coupang. The parliamentary sessions are scheduled for the 22nd and 23rd of this month.
Heo Young, the Chief Policy Deputy Floor Leader of the Democratic Party, revealed the party’s plan during a press briefing at the National Assembly. These include the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee (SIBCC), the National Policy Committee, the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, and the Climate, Energy, Environment, and Labor Committee.
The structure of the hearing committee has been finalized, with six members designated from the SIBCC, which is the primary standing committee overseeing such matters. Additionally, two representatives from each of the other participating committees will join the hearing committee, ensuring a multifaceted examination of the issue.
Heo Young emphasized that the Coupang incident extends far beyond a simple data breach. He articulated that the issue is intricately connected to a broader spectrum of concerns, encompassing labor practices, fair trade regulations, and other critical areas of corporate responsibility.
