Huawei Reclaims China Smartphone Crown, Driven by Domestic Chip Innovation

Huawei Technologies has staged a remarkable comeback, securing the top position in mainland China’s smartphone market for the full year of 2025. This resurgence marks a significant victory against the backdrop of stringent US sanctions, which previously hampered the Chinese tech giant’s access to critical components. According to a recent report, Huawei’s strategic pivot to domestically designed processors has been instrumental in its renewed market dominance.

Key Market Performance in 2025:

  • Overall Market Share: Huawei captured 16.4 per cent of China’s smartphone market, shipping an impressive 46.7 million units.
  • Close Competition: This narrowly edged out Apple, which secured the second spot with 46.2 million iPhones shipped, representing a 16.2 per cent market share.
  • Year-on-Year Trends: Huawei experienced a slight decline of 1.9 per cent in shipments compared to the previous year. Conversely, Apple saw a growth of 4 per cent.
  • Historical Significance: This achievement signifies the first time Huawei has held a full-year lead in mainland China’s smartphone market since 2020, prior to the intensification of US sanctions that restricted its access to advanced semiconductor technology.

The success is largely attributed to Huawei’s dedication to developing its own in-house chip manufacturing capabilities. The company has leveraged self-designed, China-made processors to power its latest smartphone offerings, including the advanced Kirin 9030 chip found in its premium flagship model, the Mate 80 Pro Max.

“The continuous improvement in Huawei’s in-house chip production was a key driver in 2025, providing the necessary support for its shipment momentum,” stated Will Wong, senior research manager for client devices at IDC in Asia-Pacific. This internal innovation has allowed Huawei to navigate the challenges posed by external supply chain disruptions.

Shifting Competitive Landscape in China:

The competitive dynamics within the Chinese smartphone market have also seen a notable shift. Several domestic players have intensified their global expansion efforts, directing their focus towards emerging markets such as India and Africa. This strategic move appears to be an effort to mitigate direct rivalry with a resurgent Huawei on its home turf.

Following closely behind Apple and Huawei in the 2025 rankings were Chinese manufacturers Vivo, which shipped 46.1 million units, and domestic rivals Xiaomi and Oppo.

Challenges Facing the Broader Smartphone Market:

China, as the world’s largest smartphone market, experienced a marginal decline of 0.6 per cent in total shipments in 2025, reaching 284.6 million units. Looking ahead, the market is expected to face further contraction in 2026, largely due to an ongoing crunch in memory chip supply.

“Rising memory costs are placing significant pressure on smartphone [manufacturers], and this will remain a critical challenge throughout 2026,” Wong cautioned. Chinese smartphone makers are grappling with increasing pressure from the global memory supply chain. Leading manufacturers are reportedly prioritizing capacity for key clients amidst soaring demand driven by artificial intelligence applications and infrastructure development.

This cost pressure has already prompted some companies to adjust their strategies:

  • Price Adjustments: Xiaomi and Honor have announced plans to increase the prices of their smartphones and tablets.
  • Launch Cancellations: Meizu has reportedly been forced to cancel the launch of a new handset due to mounting cost pressures.

The Premium Segment as a Buffer:

Despite these challenges, a strong presence in the premium smartphone segment is expected to provide a crucial advantage for brands like Huawei and Apple in 2026. The higher profit margins associated with high-end devices can help to absorb the escalating production costs.

The impact of increased memory prices was already evident in the fourth quarter of 2025. Domestic manufacturers responded by reducing shipments of budget-priced models to protect their profitability, contributing to an overall volume decrease of 0.8 per cent in the quarter.

However, Apple demonstrated significant resilience during the December quarter in China, with a surge of 21.5 per cent. This growth was largely driven by the successful launch of its popular iPhone 17 series, allowing Apple to reclaim the top spot in the quarter with a 21 per cent market share.

Global Smartphone Market Overview:

On a global scale, Apple maintained its position as the leading smartphone vendor for the entirety of 2025. The company held a 19.7 per cent market share, just ahead of Samsung Electronics, which secured 19.1 per cent. Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo rounded out the top five global vendors, ranking third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
