Punjab Embarks on Ambitious Urban Revitalization Initiative
Lahore, Pakistan – Punjab province is set to undergo a significant transformation with the formal launch of the “Maryam Nawaz Ka Sona Punjab” program, a flagship initiative aimed at drastically improving urban infrastructure and civic amenities across 51 cities. The comprehensive development plan, officially commenced recently, signifies a substantial commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents throughout the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over a critical meeting, underscoring the urgency and importance of the project. She issued a clear directive that the initial phase of this ambitious undertaking must be completed by June 2026. A primary focus of this first phase will be the extensive upgrade and construction of sewerage systems, alongside other vital infrastructure components in each targeted city. The Chief Minister has personally taken charge of the direct monitoring of the Punjab Development Plan, a move designed to guarantee transparency, foster efficiency, and ensure that projects are delivered within their stipulated timelines.
To facilitate seamless execution and oversight, provincial and district-level control rooms are being established. These centers will operate in real-time, enabling continuous monitoring of project progress and providing a swift mechanism for addressing public grievances and complaints. This proactive approach aims to preempt issues and maintain momentum throughout the development process.
The scale of the infrastructure development planned is substantial. Under the purview of this initiative, a staggering 5,887 kilometers of sewerage lines and 181 kilometers of drainage lines are slated for construction across the 51 participating cities. Furthermore, over 33,000 new manhole covers will be installed, a critical component for the functionality and safety of underground systems. The production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, essential for modern sewerage networks, is already in full swing, indicating a readiness to commence construction activities promptly.
City-Specific Development Blueprints Unveiled
During the review meeting, Deputy Commissioners from several key cities provided detailed briefings on their respective progress and city-specific development plans.
Multan: The city of Multan is set to benefit from the construction of 232 kilometers of sewerage lines, 81 pumps, 51 generators, and 64 kilometers of urban roads. Significant beautification and expansion efforts are also planned for Boson, Khanewal, Shujaabad, and Nishtar Roads, promising to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and traffic flow.
Gujranwala: Gujranwala’s development package is being hailed as the city’s largest ever. It includes the construction of 131 kilometers of sewerage lines, 2 kilometers of drainage lines, a crucial wastewater treatment plant, and the deployment of 16 machinery units.
Dera Ghazi Khan: This district is seeing the completion of sewerage and drainage systems valued at over Rs12 billion across two zones. A notable environmental project involves the conversion of the Manika Canal into an agricultural canal. Additionally, 140 kilometers of sewerage lines are under construction and rehabilitation.
Bhakkar: Bhakkar will receive a substantial 42-inch sewerage line, along with the installation of 100 new manholes. The city will also benefit from solar-powered disposal stations, new parks, walkways, and public washrooms, addressing both essential services and public amenities.
Vehari: Vehari is slated to receive development projects totaling Rs6.7 billion, indicating a significant investment in its infrastructure.
Sheikhupura: The city is witnessing the laying of 95 kilometers of sewerage lines. Alongside these essential works, beautification projects are being expedited to improve the urban landscape.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also provided specific directives for other areas. She called for improvements in cleanliness and civic management in Sheikhupura. She commended the revamping efforts at the District Headquarters Hospital in Kasur and ordered further enhancements to sanitation services in the city. Urgent restoration of sewerage systems in Pattoki was also mandated.
The Chief Minister reiterated her unwavering commitment to ensuring that every project under the Punjab Development Plan is executed with the highest standards of transparency and punctuality. Her vision is for development to permeate every street and neighborhood, leaving no corner of the province untouched by progress.
Murree Reopens to Tourism After Record Snowfall
In a separate but equally significant development, normal life has been fully restored in Murree following an extended period of heavy snowfall. After 30 hours of continuous, intense snowfall, the popular hill station has reopened to traffic and tourism activities, signaling a swift recovery.
A dedicated Snow Clearance Cell, established on the Chief Minister’s directives, played a pivotal role in this rapid restoration. This specialized unit worked around the clock to clear snow from 185 kilometers of key roads, a challenging task given that snow layers in several areas reached up to two feet deep. The operation involved the deployment of state-of-the-art machinery, including mechanical snow sweepers and heavy-duty bulldozers. Continuous salt spreading was also implemented to prevent icy conditions, thereby mitigating the risk of skidding and accidents.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif lauded the swift and coordinated response of the teams involved. She emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring public safety, maintaining uninterrupted mobility for residents and visitors, and facilitating the revival of the tourism sector in this vital region. The efficient handling of the snowfall crisis demonstrates the province’s capacity for effective disaster management and rapid recovery.
