Here, the city of Baoshan is steadily carving out its niche, not with tea leaves, but with premium coffee beans that are capturing the attention of connoisseurs worldwide. Situated amidst the majestic Gaoligong mountain range, Baoshan boasts a unique geographical advantage. Its subtropical climate, coupled with exceptionally fertile soil and the rugged highland terrain, creates an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality Arabica beans. This distinctive terroir imbues Baoshan’s coffee with a flavour profile that stands apart, even within China’s burgeoning coffee scene.
This confluence of natural blessings has propelled Baoshan from an unassuming locale to an emergent hub for coffee enthusiasts. The city proudly encapsulates this transformation with its slogan: “Looking at Chinese coffee, Yunnan’s specialty coffee is in Baoshan.” The roots of coffee cultivation in Baoshan stretch back to the 1950s, but it is in recent years that the city has truly accelerated its journey towards becoming a modern coffee powerhouse. This dedication was formally recognised in 2022 when Baoshan was officially designated as one of China’s pioneering regions for the development of premium coffee plantations.
Local enterprises are playing a pivotal role in elevating Baoshan’s status. Beaton Coffee, a prominent local brand, has been instrumental in introducing the city’s coffee to an international audience. Consequently, many travellers now strategically plan their itineraries to include Baoshan, eager to savour the distinct taste and captivating aroma of its locally cultivated beans. A recent observation during a visit in November underscored that Baoshan has wholeheartedly embraced coffee, integrating it not merely as an agricultural product but as a fundamental aspect of its identity. This commitment is vividly demonstrated through initiatives like the Baoshan Vocational Education Park.
Cultivating the Next Generation of Coffee Professionals

Within the expansive Baoshan Vocational Education Park lies the Baoshan Coffee Industry College, a testament to the city’s forward-thinking approach. This institution is remarkably well-equipped, featuring state-of-the-art processing machinery, sophisticated live-streaming studios, and a functional café. Here, students transition seamlessly from theoretical learning to practical application, mastering every facet of the coffee value chain. Their curriculum spans from the intricacies of cultivation and processing to the nuances of branding, sales, and the art of barista skills.
Upon entering the college’s processing area, visitors are immediately enveloped by the rich, inviting aroma of freshly handled coffee beans. The college currently hosts approximately 700 students, aged between 16 and 17, who are enrolled in a variety of coffee-centric courses. Beyond acquiring essential technical proficiencies, these young learners are also being trained in contemporary marketing strategies, including the increasingly dominant practice of selling products through live streaming – a phenomenon that has taken China by storm.
The college’s pedagogical philosophy, which emphasizes hands-on experience and competition-based learning, has already yielded significant accolades. In 2024, students from the institution achieved second place in the prestigious Cross-Strait Coffee Technician Vocational Skills Competition. Instructors at the college report that their programmes are consistently producing highly adept and adaptable young professionals, equipped to navigate and excel across the entire coffee industry spectrum. These educational endeavours are widely regarded as crucial contributors to the broader transformation of China’s coffee industry, bolstering the nation’s ambition to evolve from a large-scale producer to a more competitive and influential global player.
A Comprehensive Coffee Ecosystem: From Farm to Futuristic Café

The thriving coffee ecosystem in Baoshan is underpinned by a robust network of over 10,000 farmers, whose plantations collectively cover an impressive expanse of approximately 300,000 hectares. The daily volume of coffee sales through e-commerce platforms is staggering, exceeding 10,000 packets. This digital reach highlights the modern approach to market penetration adopted by Baoshan’s coffee producers.
Local enterprises like Baoshan Zhongka Food are actively contributing to the industry’s growth through dedicated research and development efforts. Within their advanced laboratory facilities, researchers meticulously taste and analyse brewed coffee, ensuring unwavering consistency in flavour and quality. The journey from bean to cup is a carefully managed process, beginning with the meticulous harvesting of ripe, red coffee cherries. These are subsequently sorted, thoroughly cleaned, and artfully dried before undergoing grading based on size and quality.
Experiencing Baoshan’s coffee is an event in itself. At the café operated by Baoshan Zhongka Food, a unique touch is added by robotic baristas, who prepare each beverage with remarkable precision, guaranteeing uniform aroma and taste in every single cup. The café’s menu offers a diverse range, from classic Arabica preparations to inventive blends infused with natural sweeteners and fruits like honey, caramel, berries, grapes, and apricots, each promising a distinct and memorable flavour profile.
Further enhancing the city’s coffee-centric appeal is the Coffee Cultural Park. Here, visitors can discover an array of novelties, including an intriguing selection of coffee-infused culinary creations. Among these is a surprisingly delightful offering: boiled eggs cooked in a mixture of coffee and brown sugar, an unusual combination that proves remarkably palatable. Even the souvenirs available at the park carry a caffeinated theme. Bracelets fashioned from coffee beans serve as a quirky yet meaningful memento, a small but significant symbol of Baoshan’s remarkable metamorphosis into China’s emerging “coffee city.”
