Tragic Demise: Woman Starved and Tortured for Months in MLM Scheme
A harrowing account has emerged from the Singapore High Court detailing the brutal abuse and eventual death of a 19-year-old woman, Huang Baoying, who weighed a mere 27.6kg at the time of her passing. Her death, which occurred on May 5, 2021, was the culmination of over two months of alleged starvation and torture inflicted by a man she met through a multi-level marketing (MLM) club focused on selling nutritional supplements. The alleged perpetrators also include her older brother and his married girlfriend.
In her final hours, Baoying endured unspeakable suffering. Court documents reveal she was repeatedly beaten with a wooden stick. Her tormentors allegedly forced her into a painful posture, made to sit upright with her hands tied and raised above her head, a position she was kept in for extended periods. To further inflict pain and humiliation, salt was allegedly rubbed into an open wound on her leg. The abuse continued as she was drenched under a running tap for approximately 15 minutes before being left on a mattress in the living room, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Devastating Autopsy Findings
An autopsy conducted after her death painted a grim picture of her physical deterioration. The examination revealed that Baoying had lost a staggering 43 per cent of her body weight over an 11-month period. Her weight had plummeted from 48.8kg in June 2020 to the devastating 27.6kg at the time of her death, a stark indicator of prolonged starvation and neglect. The official cause of death was attributed to a combination of severe malnutrition, sepsis, and extensive blunt force trauma.
The MLM Connection and Twisted “Discipline”
The man at the centre of the abuse, Lim Peng Tiong, a member of an MLM club that marketed Herbalife products, pleaded guilty on February 9 to an amended charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He confessed to beating Baoying approximately 240 times with a wooden stick on May 1, 2021. Prosecutors contend that Lim acted under the alleged instructions of their MLM coach, Chee Mei Wan, a 46-year-old woman.
The prosecution argued that Baoying was subjected to this horrific ordeal for no reason other than a “twisted project to purportedly ‘improve’ her behaviour.” Court testimony indicated that Chee had implemented a system of punishments, including fines and physical discipline, with the stated aim of “correcting” habits she believed were negatively impacting product sales and commission earnings.
Escalating Abuse and Targeted Victimization
The court heard that Chee, who was married at the time of the events, was also involved in a romantic relationship with Baoying’s 34-year-old brother, Huang Bocan. This alleged power dynamic and personal relationship may have contributed to the escalating nature of the abuse. The punishment regime, initially presented as a means to correct behaviour, allegedly devolved into prolonged torture. Baoying was reportedly singled out for the harshest treatment, as she was perceived to be undisciplined and performed poorly in sales, making her a prime target for Chee’s misguided disciplinary measures.
A Pattern of Deprivation and Cruelty
Between February 16 and May 4, 2021, Baoying’s suffering intensified. She was systematically deprived of food, confined in a toilet for extended periods, and subjected to beatings despite her already weakened and injured state. From April 2021 onwards, the deprivation became even more severe, with Baoying sometimes denied food for days, allowed only water.
Sentencing Submissions and Pending Charges
During sentencing submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh advocated for a 20-year jail term for Lim. He argued that while Lim might not have been as directly culpable as Chee and Bocan, he actively participated in and enabled the abuse, creating an environment where it could continue undetected.
Conversely, Lim’s lawyer, Kate Loo, sought an 11-year jail sentence. She presented her client as a victim himself, claiming he was also subjected to the same punishment regime and had been “brainwashed” by his accomplices. She emphasized that Lim did not dictate the penalties imposed.
The case is scheduled for further submissions on March 2. Meanwhile, both Chee Mei Wan and Huang Bocan are facing more severe murder charges, with their respective cases still progressing through the court system. All three individuals were initially charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt before the charges were escalated to murder, reflecting the gravity of the alleged crimes.
