Michelle Yeoh Honoured with Prestigious Honorary Golden Bear at Berlinale
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival commenced with a glittering opening ceremony on February 12th in the German capital. The event celebrated cinematic artistry and recognised the significant contributions of global talent, with a particular spotlight on acclaimed actor Michelle Yeoh, who was presented with the coveted Honorary Golden Bear.
Renowned film director Sean Baker took to the stage to deliver a heartfelt tribute to Yeoh before presenting the award. Baker lauded the Berlin Film Festival as a platform that champions “bold voices, risk-takers, and artists who refuse to be confined to a single mold.” He described the honoree as an individual who embodies these very qualities.
“In that sense, tonight’s honoree is truly perfect,” Baker stated, introducing Yeoh as “an actor with a screen presence that comes once in a generation. She is not just someone who appears in films; she completely transforms the atmosphere of a space.” The director also noted his recent collaboration with Yeoh on the short film Sandiwara.
Baker continued, emphasizing the appropriateness of bestowing the Honorary Golden Bear, a symbol of “artistic freedom, resilience, and courage,” upon Michelle Yeoh. He concluded his tribute by expressing his gratitude: “Thank you for decades of unforgettable performances, for raising the standards for all of us, and for reminding us why we fell in love with cinema in the first place.”
A Grateful Acceptance and a Look Back
Upon receiving the Golden Bear trophy, Michelle Yeoh appeared visibly moved, at one point wiping away tears of joy. She began her acceptance speech with a lighthearted remark directed at Director Baker, “I look forward to working with Director Baker again. However, I hope there are no sexual scenes.”
Her address then turned more profound as she spoke of her enduring aspirations. “There is still a young girl in my heart who wanted to make her parents proud,” she shared. Yeoh reflected on the absence of her father at this momentous occasion, stating, “Although my father did not live to see this moment, I carry his teachings, his steadfastness, and his belief that if something is worth doing, it should be done properly in my heart.” She expressed confidence that her father would have been proud, adding, “If my father had seen me holding this Golden Bear tonight, he would have definitely smiled.” The poignant words were met with a standing ovation from the assembled audience.

Breaking Barriers and Advocating for Change
With this significant accolade, Michelle Yeoh has made history as the first Asian woman to be awarded the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale.
In an interview conducted prior to the festival’s opening, Yeoh shared her deep connection to the event. “The Berlin Film Festival has always been a very special place for me,” she remarked. Reflecting on her career, she described the award as a recognition of her “journey and career over nearly 40 years, and how persistent and stubborn I have been.” A significant part of this journey, she noted, involved “fighting against stereotypical roles assigned to Asian actors.”
Yeoh expressed optimism that her recognition signifies a broader shift. “Receiving this award shows that people like me will be recognized more, receive more attention, and have more voices in the future,” she stated. However, she also underscored the importance of active engagement, emphasizing, “However, we also have a responsibility to make our voices heard. We must speak up.”

A Trailblazing Career in Film
Michelle Yeoh’s journey to international stardom is a testament to her talent and perseverance. Born in 1962 into a prominent ethnic Chinese family in Malaysia, she launched her career in entertainment by winning the Miss Malaysia pageant in 1983. She quickly rose to prominence as an action star in Hong Kong cinema during the 1980s and 1990s, starring in iconic films such as the Yes, Madam series and Police Story.
Her transition to Hollywood in the 2000s marked a new chapter in her career. In 2023, Yeoh achieved a monumental milestone by becoming the first Malaysian and the first Asian actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards. This historic win was for her transformative performance in the critically acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All at Once.
