Courtside Collision: Bill Maher and Marcus Smart Suffer Injuries in Lakers Game
Sitting courtside at a professional basketball game, especially one as fast-paced and physical as an NBA matchup, inherently carries the risk of getting a little too close for comfort to the on-court action. Political commentator and comedian Bill Maher recently experienced this firsthand, finding himself on the receiving end of a collision with a player during a game between the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The incident occurred during a Sunday afternoon fixture where Maher was seated in prime position, just metres from the hardwood. As the Lakers’ guard, Marcus Smart, battled for a loose ball, he lost his footing and crashed into the spectator area, colliding with Maher. Both individuals appeared to sustain injuries from the impact.

The television cameras quickly focused on Maher, who visibly showed his injured finger to the ESPN broadcast crew. While the extent of Maher’s injury wasn’t immediately clear, he remained in his seat for the remainder of the game, suggesting it wasn’t a severe ailment.
Meanwhile, Marcus Smart also seemed to be in discomfort. Reports indicate the veteran guard was seen favouring his left hand after the collision. This was particularly noticeable after he missed a corner three-point shot shortly after the incident. Smart subsequently checked out of the game, continuing to appear to be nursing his injured hand. However, in a display of resilience, he did eventually return to the court and played out the rest of the contest.

Despite the courtside drama, the Lakers went on to secure a victory over the Knicks, with a final score of 110-97. This win marked a significant achievement for the Lakers, representing the fourth time this season they have managed to hold an opponent to fewer than 100 points, a testament to their defensive prowess.
Leading the charge for the Lakers on this particular night was Luka Doncic, who delivered an impressive performance despite the absence of LeBron James from the lineup. Doncic put up a formidable stat line, scoring 35 points, pulling down eight rebounds, and dishing out four assists.
As for Marcus Smart, the impact of the collision and his subsequent injury appeared to affect his offensive output. He struggled on the shooting front, converting only one of his ten field goal attempts and going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. His final tally for the game included just five points, four assists, and two steals. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of live sporting events and the occupational hazards that can extend even to those in attendance.
