Audi’s Aussie Hybrid Push as Diesels Fade

Audi Eyes Australian Electrification Push with Hybrid Focus

Audi’s global sales chief has pinpointed Australia as a key market for the German luxury automaker’s electrification strategy, with a strong emphasis on hybrid models potentially paving the way for the phased retirement of diesel offerings in the local market.

Speaking at the recent 2026 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, where the brand unveiled its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Audi RS5, Marco Schubert, Audi’s Head of Sales and Board Member, articulated the brand’s commitment to hybrid technology for Australia.

“We firmly believe, much like in Europe and other markets, that electrification is the path forward,” Mr Schubert stated. “A prime example of effective hybrid execution is the RS5, particularly given Australia’s significant interest in Audi Sport products.”

The newly launched RS5 boasts an impressive 470kW/825Nm plug-in hybrid powertrain. This system seamlessly integrates a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor, housed within an eight-speed transmission and complemented by Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system.

“This technology not only enhances performance but also plays a crucial role in managing CO2 emissions,” Mr Schubert explained. “For a market like Australia, which is progressively moving towards zero-emission vehicles, this is an exceptionally important consideration for us.”

Audi had previously set an ambitious target to transition to selling only electric vehicles (EVs) by 2033, with the exception of the Chinese market. However, in a strategic shift mirroring moves by other major manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Porsche, and the Volkswagen brand, Audi revised its EV-only targets last year. This recalibration acknowledges the evolving market landscape and the continued demand for diverse powertrain options.

The adoption of hybrid powertrains as a successor to diesel engines is not a new strategy in the automotive industry. Brands such as Hyundai have successfully integrated hybrid technology to replace their diesel offerings, providing a bridge to full electrification.

“This is certainly an objective we are pursuing, particularly in meeting stringent legislation in various countries,” Mr Schubert commented. “We are closely monitoring customer demand and the evolving regulatory environment. While diesel remains a part of our product portfolio, its availability is market-dependent, and we will continue to offer it in models like the new Q7.”

Beyond the Q7, Audi’s Australian lineup currently includes diesel variants of the Q5 and Q8 SUVs. However, unlike its European counterparts, Australia does not receive diesel versions of the latest A5. Similarly, established diesel models like the A6 and A8 have been retired from the local market.

The increasing popularity of hybrid models, especially in major markets like the United States, one of Audi’s largest sales regions, was a significant factor in the brand’s decision to scale back its 2033 EV-only ambition.

In Australia, hybrid vehicle sales have experienced remarkable growth over the past two years. Hybrid models currently outsell both pure EVs and PHEVs, although the latter two segments are also witnessing consistent expansion. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, for instance, has secured its position as Australia’s second best-selling vehicle in both 2024 and 2025, trailing only the predominantly diesel-powered Ford Ranger in overall popularity.

Audi Australia first introduced a plug-in hybrid model with the A3 e-tron hatchback back in 2015. The current PHEV offerings include the A5 range, encompassing the new RS5, as well as the Q5 and Q8 SUVs. There’s also potential for a Q3 PHEV to join the local showrooms.

Internationally, Audi offers PHEV versions of the A3, A6, and Q7. Furthermore, the brand is preparing to launch the three-row Q9 large SUV, which is expected to feature a PHEV powertrain option, though its Australian availability is yet to be officially confirmed.

Audi’s current battery-electric lineup in Australia comprises the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and the e-tron GT sports car. The previous Q8 e-tron has been discontinued locally.

“I believe our strong and diverse product range, which includes a substantial selection of electric vehicles, positions us well,” Mr Schubert added. “By also focusing on hybrids, which I understand are favoured here from a taxation perspective, we see a significant opportunity to further develop the electric market.”

The broader Volkswagen Group is also expanding its PHEV offerings in Australia. The Touareg R PHEV is set to be joined by PHEV versions of the new-generation Tiguan and Tayron SUVs in local showrooms this year. Production of the Touareg, which shares its platform with the Audi Q7/Q8 and other Volkswagen Group SUVs, is scheduled to conclude this year, with Australian orders closing this month.

The global shift towards hybrid technology has been further influenced by regulatory changes. In 2026, for example, the weakening of emissions regulations by the Trump administration in the US has contributed to this trend.

Europe is also adapting its emissions targets. The previous mandate for all new cars to be 100 per cent zero-emission by 2035 has been adjusted to 90 per cent, allowing internal combustion engines to persist in hybrid configurations. In response to these shifts, Audi has indicated plans to continue offering internal combustion engine powertrains into the 2030s, without setting a definitive end date for their production.

Conversely, Australia has strengthened its emissions regulations with the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) last year. This has prompted various automotive brands to introduce new electrified options to meet their CO2 targets.

Exploring Audi’s Electrified Future

Audi’s strategic pivot towards hybrid technology in Australia is a calculated move to align with local market demands, regulatory pressures, and the brand’s global electrification goals. The company’s commitment to offering a diverse range of powertrains, including advanced hybrids, ensures they remain competitive and responsive to the evolving automotive landscape in Australia.

The introduction of models like the RS5 PHEV signifies Audi’s intent to blend performance with sustainability. This approach caters to enthusiasts who appreciate the driving dynamics of Audi Sport models while also addressing the growing consumer preference for more environmentally conscious vehicles.

The success of hybrid vehicles in Australia, as evidenced by their strong sales figures and the popularity of models like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, provides a solid foundation for Audi’s strategy. By leveraging this momentum, Audi aims to capture a larger share of the market segment that is actively seeking efficient and sophisticated alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines.

Furthermore, the brand’s acknowledgement of potential tax benefits associated with hybrids in Australia underscores a pragmatic approach to market penetration. This financial incentive can be a significant factor for consumers when making purchasing decisions, making hybrid Audis an attractive proposition.

The company’s flexibility in adapting its global EV targets also reflects a nuanced understanding of regional market dynamics. While the long-term vision remains electrification, the interim focus on hybrids allows Audi to maintain its presence and appeal across a broader spectrum of buyers in Australia. This strategy ensures that as the market matures and charging infrastructure expands, Audi will be well-positioned to transition fully to electric mobility.

The ongoing development of PHEV technology, as seen in the RS5 and other upcoming models, demonstrates Audi’s commitment to innovation. These powertrains offer the best of both worlds: the ability to operate on electric power for shorter journeys, reducing emissions and fuel consumption, and the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer trips, eliminating range anxiety.

As Australia continues to embrace a more sustainable future, Audi’s hybrid-centric approach appears to be a well-timed and strategically sound decision. It not only addresses current market realities but also lays the groundwork for a future where electrification, in its various forms, will define the automotive industry.
