Manhunt Underway After Double Homicide Near TPC Sawgrass Grounds
Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt for a suspect accused of fatally shooting two individuals in a Walgreens parking lot adjacent to the TPC Sawgrass, the prestigious venue hosting The Players Championship. The shocking incident on Friday night prompted a delayed opening of the tournament gates for the third round on Saturday morning, as law enforcement worked to secure the area.
Sheriff Rob Hardwick of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, 32. According to Sheriff Hardwick, Barrios allegedly perpetrated the deadly assault around 10:30 pm on Friday. The victims were reportedly shot multiple times in what is being investigated as a domestic violence situation. The Walgreens store is situated approximately a mile from the golf course, which is set to conclude its championship events on Sunday.
The pursuit of Barrios took a dramatic turn as canine units tracked him onto the TPC Sawgrass property. Sheriff Hardwick detailed that the suspect, who coincidentally celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday, was observed interacting with PGA Tour radio equipment at one point during the ordeal before discarding it.
The situation escalated further when Barrios allegedly stole a black BMW. Authorities in Nassau County, located in the northeasternmost part of Florida, engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle. This chase ultimately ended when the car crashed into the woods.

Despite the crash, Barrios managed to flee the scene on foot and remains at large. The urgency of the situation led the PGA to postpone the opening of the tournament gates until 9 a.m. on Saturday, citing “operational considerations” for the delay. The first round, however, commenced as scheduled at 8:15 a.m. without any disruptions. Hospitality areas were also affected, with their opening pushed back to 11 a.m.
Sheriff Hardwick emphasised that Barrios has a significant criminal history and had a prior connection to the victims. Both individuals sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital, where they tragically succumbed to their injuries. The shooting occurred mere hours after the conclusion of the second round of The Players Championship, casting a dark shadow over the prestigious sporting event.
Golfing Action Continues Amidst Security Concerns
While the manhunt intensified, the golfing competition at The Players Championship moved forward. Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg currently holds a commanding two-shot lead heading into the third round. Aberg posted an impressive nine-under-par 63 on Friday, propelling him to a total score of 12-under-par.
He is closely followed by American golfer Xander Schauffele, who sits two shots behind Aberg. A strong contingent of golfers, including Cameron Young and Justin Thomas, are also in contention and will be looking to make their move up the leaderboard over the weekend. The juxtaposition of the intense search for a dangerous suspect with the high-stakes professional golf tournament has created a unique and tense atmosphere at TPC Sawgrass. The safety of players, spectators, and tournament staff remains a paramount concern for organisers and law enforcement officials as they continue their efforts to apprehend Barrios.
