Panthers Stalwart Matt Eisenhuth Calls Time on NRL Career
Penrith Panthers veteran Matt Eisenhuth has announced his immediate retirement from the National Rugby League, bringing an end to a distinguished career that saw him become a consistent presence during the club’s recent era of dominance. While Eisenhuth was a valuable contributor throughout the Panthers’ remarkable run, he did not feature in any of the four consecutive Grand Final victories that have etched the club into rugby league folklore.
The 33-year-old forward was part of the extended squad for the 2024 Grand Final against Melbourne. However, a late recovery by Scott Sorensen saw Eisenhuth narrowly miss out on selection in the final 17, preventing him from participating in Penrith’s record-equalling fourth consecutive premiership win.
Eisenhuth himself stated that the decision to retire was a personal one, feeling that the timing was right for him to step away from the game. Crucially, his retirement is not attributed to any lingering injuries or a dip in form, but rather a conscious choice to hang up his boots. While contracted for the current season, it appears the landscape for first-grade opportunities has shifted at the foot of the mountains. The arrival of new recruits such as Kalani Going and Tom Ale, coupled with the impressive emergence of young talent like Billy Phillips, has seen Eisenhuth fall further down the pecking order for starting roles.
A Legacy of Hard Work and Respect
Panthers’ Football Manager, Matt Cameron, who previously coached Eisenhuth during his time in the now-defunct National Youth Competition, paid heartfelt tribute to the departing player. “It’s been an absolute privilege to watch Matt’s transition from a young player with raw potential into the incredibly professional and highly respected athlete he is today,” Cameron remarked.
Cameron elaborated on Eisenhuth’s impact, highlighting his unwavering dedication. “His exceptional work ethic, natural leadership qualities, and profound commitment to the team were instrumental in setting the benchmark for those around him. He played an undeniably important role in the significant success we’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy in recent years,” he added.

Career Highlights and Milestones
Matt Eisenhuth’s NRL journey began in 2017 when he made his debut for the Wests Tigers under the tutelage of Ivan Cleary, who would later become his coach at Penrith. Over his career, he amassed an impressive 145 NRL appearances.
He arrived at the Panthers in 2021 and quickly established himself as a reliable member of their middle-forward rotation, often coming off the interchange bench to provide impact and stability. Beyond his NRL commitments, Eisenhuth was also a key figure in Penrith’s successful 2022 campaign, where he helped the club secure both the NSW Cup and the State Championship titles, capping off a year of remarkable dominance across all grades.
Eisenhuth’s final NRL game came in round 26 of last season when he captained an understrength Panthers side against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. His very last professional appearance was in the annual Prime Minister’s XIII clash against Papua New Guinea late last year, a fitting swansong for a player who consistently gave his all for the jersey. His departure marks the end of an era for a player who embodied the grit and determination synonymous with the Penrith Panthers.
