Foran’s Return Sparks Hope for Trbojevic and Sea Eagles’ Future
The Manly Sea Eagles are pinning their hopes on the return of former playmaker Kieran Foran to revitalise the team, particularly their star fullback Tom Trbojevic. With Foran stepping in as caretaker coach following Anthony Seibold’s abrupt departure, club officials believe this change could be precisely what their marquee player needs.
Owner and chairman Scott Penn has been vocal about his desire for Seibold’s permanent successor to embody the “Manly DNA,” a sentiment that aligns with Foran’s intimate understanding of the club’s culture and its players. As Foran took the reins at his first training session on Sunday, the club chairman articulated his confidence in the new leadership.
Trbojevic, a local junior and the club’s captain, has committed his future to Manly until the end of 2027 with a contract extension signed last year. However, his 2023 season was marked by a struggle for form, even seeing him shifted from his preferred fullback position to the centres in an attempt to rediscover his magic. Penn is convinced that Foran’s appointment can offer a significant boost.
“Tommy is the captain of our club, and he’s at Manly for as long as he wants to be, and for as long as he feels like he can contribute to the team,” Penn stated on Sunday. “He’s not going anywhere. And I truly believe the appointment of ‘Foz’ [Foran] might actually help him. I think the whole situation can help him.”
Penn emphasised Foran’s capacity for direct communication, a trait he believes will be crucial for Trbojevic. “Foz has never been afraid to have a tough conversation with players. He’s played with Tommy, he knows what he likes and his style,” Penn explained. “Foz will make sure he holds every player to the same standards he holds himself to.” This approach suggests a clear message to Trbojevic: a return to his dominant fullback role, coupled with accountability.
A Search for Coaching Talent with Sea Eagles Roots
The search for a permanent head coach is already underway, with a number of candidates possessing strong connections to the Sea Eagles being considered. This list includes familiar faces within the Manly system:
- Kieran Foran: The current caretaker coach, a beloved former player and now a potential permanent fixture.
- Brett Kimmorley: The current assistant coach, offering continuity and in-depth knowledge of the squad.
- Matt Ballin: A premiership winner with Manly and now an assistant coach at the Broncos, bringing valuable experience from outside the club.
- Mick Ennis: A former Sea Eagles assistant and currently an assistant with the Dragons, possessing a strong coaching pedigree.
- Brad Arthur: A former Manly assistant who is now coaching in the Super League with Leeds, bringing international coaching perspective.
While Willie Peters was also considered a strong contender, his commitment to the PNG Chiefs has ruled him out of the running for now.

Chairman Scott Penn is resolute in his preference for a coach with a deep understanding of Manly’s ethos and expectations. He believes this “Manly DNA” is essential for guiding the club towards future premiership success.
“It’s always ideal if the coach is a Manly person,” Penn asserted. “We need the right calibre of person to help us win premierships. It’s important to have someone who understands our DNA and expectations of the club.”
Penn elaborated on the unique insight that former players bring: “Having played at Manly, those individuals know the expectations and what people expect. That’s not to say people who haven’t played or been at our club won’t know that, but if you’ve lived and breathed and bled for the Sea Eagles, you truly understand it.”
Captain’s Input Crucial for Coaching Appointment
Beyond the coach’s alignment with the club’s identity, Penn stressed the importance of a strong working relationship between the new coach and the team’s captain. In the context of the Sea Eagles’ current situation, this means Tom Trbojevic will play a vital role in the selection process.
“When it comes to the next coach the reality is our captain will also need to get on with the person coming in,” Penn concluded. This collaborative approach underscores the club’s commitment to ensuring a harmonious and effective leadership structure, aiming to harness the full potential of their talented roster and restore Manly to its former glory. The coming weeks will be crucial as the club navigates this significant coaching transition, with the eyes of the Sea Eagles faithful firmly fixed on the future.
