Another Tragic Loss: Second Young Man Dies in NT Police Custody Within a Week
The Northern Territory is once again grappling with the devastating reality of deaths in custody, as a second young man has died in police detention in less than seven days. Authorities confirmed the latest fatality on Sunday morning, revealing that a 26-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at the Darwin Correctional Centre in Holtze.
Correctional officers discovered the man at approximately 7:50 am. Despite immediate medical assistance being provided at the scene, he was tragically declared deceased.
Kate Chambers, Assistant Commissioner for NT Correctional Services, stated that the department is committed to cooperating fully with all investigative and review processes that will follow. “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the person’s family and loved ones,” she commented. The death has been reported to the NT coroner and will undergo an independent investigation, as is standard procedure for all deaths in custody. Chambers stressed that further details cannot be released at this stage while these crucial processes are in motion. The man’s next of kin have been notified, though the cause of his death remains undisclosed by police.
This somber event follows closely on the heels of another young man’s death in Darwin custody just days earlier. The two incidents are understood to be unrelated, yet the lack of disclosed causes of death for either individual has amplified community concerns.
The earlier incident occurred on Tuesday, involving a 25-year-old Indigenous man. He was arrested and placed in the back of a caged police vehicle when he began experiencing breathing difficulties.
Assistant Commissioner Peter Malley explained that an ambulance was dispatched to Tiwi Gardens Retirement Village, where the arrest took place, but faced an initial delay in arrival. Officers present at the scene commenced CPR as the man’s condition worsened. An ambulance eventually arrived within ten minutes and transported him to Royal Darwin Hospital. Sadly, he passed away later that same evening.
Both of these deeply unfortunate events will trigger a mandatory coronial inquest. This rigorous process is a legal requirement in the Northern Territory for any death that occurs while an individual is in custody, ensuring thorough examination and accountability. The recurring nature of these tragedies within such a short timeframe underscores the urgent need for continued scrutiny and action regarding the circumstances surrounding deaths in police and correctional facilities across the Territory. Families are left to mourn, and questions linger about the systemic issues that may contribute to these devastating outcomes. The Northern Territory community awaits the findings of these investigations with heavy hearts and a profound sense of urgency.
