Queensland Opposition Leader’s Powerlifting Achievement
Queensland Opposition Leader Steven Miles has once again captured public attention, this time for his impressive performance in a powerlifting event. The 48-year-old politician demonstrated remarkable strength by deadlifting almost 200kg during the 2026 Council of Australia Powerlifting Organisation (CAPO) Queensland State Championships.
Miles participated in the under-90kg division at the Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane, where he spent eight hours competing in various powerlifting exercises. His efforts included squats, bench press, and deadlifting, with each challenge pushing him to his physical limits.
His performance was nothing short of impressive. He achieved a solid 150kg squat and a 107.5kg bench press, but it was his personal-best deadlift of 197.5kg that truly stood out. This achievement highlighted not only his physical capabilities but also his dedication to maintaining a strong and healthy lifestyle.
Miles shared clips of his lifts on Instagram, providing insight into his motivation for training and competing. In one caption, he wrote, “Just a dad from qld lifting some serious tin.” He also addressed the common question about his lifting habits, saying, “It’s always ‘How much do you bench Steven?’ and never ‘Why do you bench Steven?'”
He explained his reasons clearly: “For my physical health, for my mental health, for my kids.” This message resonated with many, and his post received widespread support on social media.
Social Media Reactions
The online community responded positively to Miles’s post, with many praising his efforts. One user wrote, “Role model for the world mate, run for PM next time.” Another added, “Light weight baby! Yeah buddy wooooooooh! Light weight! Yeah budddyyy! Gj,” referencing the catchphrase popularized by legendary bodybuilder Ronnie Coleman.
Another comment highlighted the long-term benefits of strength sports, stating, “Nice lifting Steven! That 200 will be there. The great thing about strength sports is you can keep getting stronger and realising those health gains into your 50s and 60s.” Meanwhile, some users made light-hearted jabs at Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, with one writing, “Crisafulli wouldn’t be able to lift the bar.”
A Longstanding Commitment to Fitness
Miles has maintained an active lifestyle for years, and his powerlifting performance is not the first time he has drawn attention for his physique. In 2024, he sparked debate when he showed off his muscular frame while volunteering at a school’s working bee.
During an event at Dakabin State School in his electorate of Murrumba, north of Brisbane, Miles was photographed carrying a garbage bin. While typically seen in suits during press conferences, his biceps were visible through his T-shirt, leading to mixed reactions.
Some social media users expressed envy at his apparent “thirst trap photo,” while others accused him of turning an act of goodwill into a PR opportunity. Despite the controversy, Miles’s commitment to fitness and health remains evident.

His recent powerlifting achievements continue to highlight his dedication to physical and mental well-being. As he continues to push his limits, it’s clear that Miles is not just a politician but also a dedicated athlete who inspires many through his efforts.
