Overnight, Russia unleashed a significant barrage of drones and missiles upon Ukraine, coinciding with planned discussions between Kyiv and Washington regarding potential avenues for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, Moscow deployed a total of 653 drones and 51 missiles. This large-scale assault triggered widespread air raid alerts across the nation. Ukrainian forces claim to have successfully intercepted and neutralized 585 drones and 30 missiles during the aerial onslaught.
President Zelenskyy confirmed that 29 locations were impacted by the attacks, resulting in injuries to at least eight individuals, including three in the capital city, Kyiv. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Zelenskyy detailed the extent of the damage, stating, “There have also been strikes on industrial facilities and residential buildings in the Kyiv region.” He further noted that the Dnipro, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Volyn, and Mykolaiv regions were also affected by the Russian offensive.
Zelenskyy emphasized that energy infrastructure constituted the primary target of the attacks. He also highlighted the strike on the main railway station building in Fastiv, an action he deemed “meaningless from a military point of view,” suggesting that Moscow was undoubtedly aware of the civilian nature of the location.
Conversely, Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 116 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory during the same period.
Astra, a Russian Telegram news channel, reported that Ukraine had targeted Russia’s Ryazan Oil Refinery.
Pavel Malkov, the regional governor, acknowledged damage to a residential building as a result of the drone attack. He also confirmed that drone debris landed at an industrial facility, though he made no specific mention of the oil refinery.
Ukraine has recently intensified its efforts targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure. Kyiv asserts that these facilities are a crucial source of funding for Moscow’s ongoing military operations. This strategy aims to increase pressure on the Kremlin to cease hostilities and engage in genuine peace negotiations.
Russia, in turn, has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, with the apparent goal of depriving the country of essential resources such as heat, electricity, and running water, particularly during the harsh winter months.
Peace Negotiations Underway
These recent attacks coincide with a series of meetings scheduled between Ukrainian and US officials, commencing on Saturday, for a third consecutive day. The discussions focus on potential pathways to ending the war in Ukraine.
The United States has played an intermediary role in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, seeking to broker a peace agreement. However, Kyiv and its European allies have voiced skepticism, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of insincere interest in pursuing genuine peace. They cite the lack of significant progress or compromise resulting from previous talks with the US as evidence of Russia’s lack of commitment.
