Apple TV+’s “Pluribus” Shatters Records, Becomes Most-Watched Show in Platform History
Apple TV+ has a new king of its streaming domain. The apocalyptic science-fiction series “Pluribus,” from the acclaimed mind of “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, has officially secured its place as the most-watched show in Apple TV+ history, a monumental achievement that underscores its critical and popular success. As the series heads into its final weeks, it has not only garnered a slew of rave reviews but has also rewritten the platform’s viewership records.
Heralded as a strong contender for one of the best shows of the year, and potentially the decade, “Pluribus” has consistently impressed critics. The BBC has lauded it as ‘one of the smartest shows of 2025,’ while Looper declared it ‘TV’s next great show.’ These accolades are reflected in its impressive 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 139 reviews. The series’ debut itself was a significant event, surpassing the premiere of “Severance” season two to become the biggest drama launch the platform had ever witnessed, accumulating 6.4 million hours watched in the US alone within its first seven days.
This latest record means “Pluribus” has outshone not only established platform favourites like “The Morning Show” and “Slow Horses” but has also decisively surpassed the highly anticipated “Severance.”
A World Saved from Happiness
The narrative of “Pluribus” centres on Carol (played by Rhea Seehorn), a woman described as the “most miserable woman on Earth.” Her mission is to save humanity from happiness, a peculiar and urgent task when the majority of the human population succumbs to an extraterrestrial mind virus that eradicates individuality and critical thought.
Beyond its captivating premise, the series offers a timely and potent message. In an era increasingly defined by the looming threat of Artificial Intelligence and escalating societal polarisation, “Pluribus” serves as a stark reminder against allowing rigid political systems to dictate our thinking. Yet, despite this weighty subject matter, Vince Gilligan masterfully weaves in elements of hilarious levity and a profoundly life-affirming soul. This delicate balance is largely attributed to Rhea Seehorn’s powerhouse performance, which is both multi-faceted and commanding, firmly establishing her as a leading figure in contemporary television.
While “Pluribus” may not be “Breaking Bad” or “Better Call Saul,” it represents a wonderfully singular and confident stride in a new creative direction for an already masterful writer.
A Testament to Creative Freedom and Ample Resources
What makes “Pluribus’s” record-breaking success even more remarkable is its achievement with two episodes still to air before the season finale on December 26th. Fans can rejoice, as a second season has already been greenlit, though hopes are high for a swift return rather than a prolonged wait.
Vince Gilligan, reflecting on the creative process behind “Pluribus” and comparing it to his experiences with “Breaking Bad,” expressed his immense satisfaction. He highlighted the significant budgetary increase provided by Apple, which allowed for a grander scope and vision. Crucially, he also emphasized the invaluable gift of time and creative freedom afforded to the production.
“It is wonderful, I’ve got so say,” Gilligan remarked. “It was a step up budgetarily with Apple, but they’ve also given us the time. They haven’t been breathing down our necks, which to me is just as important, probably more important. AMC was very generous to us on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but this show is at a whole different level, scope-wise. But even then, the budget was barely enough. At a lot of times we were running out of money.”
This statement is particularly striking given reports suggesting an impressive $15 million per episode budget, as noted by Rolling Stone.
Where to Watch “Pluribus”
