Izak Rankine Shines in AFL Return, But Crows Face Setback
Adelaide Crows coach Matthew Nicks has expressed confidence that Izak Rankine will benefit from the upcoming season after a remarkable moment during the team’s match on Friday night. The crowd at Adelaide Oval was left in awe as Rankine, playing his first game of the AFL season due to a suspension he received in 2025, scored an extraordinary goal from near the boundary line. This goal gave the Crows a late lead, but the Western Bullgogs managed to steal the victory with a six-point win, scoring 14.10 (94) to the Crows’ 13.10 (88).
Rankine started the game on the interchange bench but quickly sparked a run of five goals for the Crows within just 10 minutes. His goal from the pocket was reminiscent of the kind of play that Eddie Betts is known for, and it had fans and commentators raving online. One fan wrote: “RANKINE YOU CAN’T DO THAT.” Another commented: “Thrilled Rankine is back in the team. A valuable player. Has to be goal of the year. I know, lots of goals/games to play.”
In a press conference, Nicks praised Rankine’s return to the field. He said, “It’s great to get him back out there. I think he’d be the first one to say it wasn’t necessarily his best. But what do you expect from a guy who hasn’t played footy for so long? He had a few real key moments, which is typical Izak. He can do stuff that a lot of guys can’t. And he’ll be better for the run. It was nice to see him back out there, in amongst the group. He has been leading off-field, so it was a chance for him to get on-field and get amongst it.”
Callum Ah Chee Faces New Setback
The Crows suffered another blow when prized recruit Callum Ah Chee faced yet another hamstring injury. This setback looks set to send him to the sidelines for a period of time. Ah Chee had previously injured the same hamstring during the State of Origin game in the pre-season before making his debut for the Crows after switching from Brisbane.
Nicks spoke highly of Ah Chee’s performance, saying, “It was a huge effort.” He added, “You talk about moments… we find ourselves flat for most of the game, and then Cal does an effort that lifts the group, which is huge, and I reckon he did another three or four in between that. Then he lunges for one maybe he didn’t need to, but the adrenalin is pumping and he’s doing everything he can to get us over the line. It’s a tough one for Cal, we just can’t quite get that one right.”

Key Moments and Challenges
The match highlighted both the brilliance of Rankine and the challenges the Crows face with injuries. While Rankine’s performance was a bright spot, the team’s inability to hold onto their lead proved costly. Nicks acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, emphasizing the importance of players like Rankine and Ah Chee in the team’s success.
