Anwar: Law-breaking places of worship face demolition

Strict Enforcement on Unauthorised Places of Worship Announced by Prime Minister

PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared a firm stance from the government regarding the construction of places of worship, asserting that local councils are now empowered to demolish any structure found to be in deliberate violation of existing laws. This directive signals a significant shift in policy, aiming to ensure stringent adherence to regulatory frameworks governing such establishments across the nation.

The Prime Minister explicitly stated that Putrajaya will no longer countenance the erection of any house of worship that falls outside the purview of established legal and regulatory requirements. This announcement underscores a commitment to upholding the rule of law and preventing the proliferation of structures built without proper authorisation or in defiance of zoning and planning regulations.

“I want to announce the government’s stand: we will no longer allow (the construction of houses of worship) that breach the law,” the Prime Minister declared during the national unity ministry’s monthly assembly. This unequivocal statement leaves no room for ambiguity regarding the administration’s future approach to this sensitive issue.

To facilitate the effective implementation of this policy, local councils have been vested with the authority to undertake necessary actions. This includes the power to “clean up these areas” where unauthorised structures have been erected, thereby addressing the problem decisively. The aim is to resolve these long-standing issues and prevent future occurrences of non-compliance.

While acknowledging that such stringent measures might invite controversy, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of a balanced and lawful approach. He also took the opportunity to address potential overreactions from certain groups, stating, “But I want to say this: those who act excessively to the point of embarking on campaigns to demolish temples are also in the wrong. That’s the government’s job.” This statement appears to caution against vigilantism and reinforces that the responsibility for enforcement lies squarely with the designated authorities.

The government’s move is likely intended to address concerns related to:

  • Land Use and Zoning: Ensuring that places of worship are situated in areas designated for such purposes and do not infringe upon residential, commercial, or agricultural zones without due process.
  • Public Safety and Infrastructure: Verifying that structures meet building codes and safety standards, and that their construction does not place undue strain on existing public infrastructure.
  • Community Harmony: Preventing disputes and potential conflicts arising from the unauthorised construction of religious sites, which can sometimes lead to tensions between different communities.
  • Legal Compliance: Upholding the principle that all constructions, regardless of their purpose, must adhere to the legal framework established by the nation.

The Prime Minister’s announcement signals a period of heightened scrutiny and enforcement concerning places of worship. The government’s intention is to foster an environment where religious freedom can be exercised within the bounds of the law, ensuring that all structures contribute positively to the community and comply with the nation’s planning and legal directives. This proactive approach aims to preempt potential issues and maintain order in land use and community development. The exact mechanisms and criteria for identifying and addressing non-compliant structures are expected to be further elaborated by relevant ministries and local authorities in the coming weeks.
