Brad Arthur’s Impact on Leeds and Potential NRL Return
Brad Arthur has once again demonstrated his remarkable ability to transform rugby league clubs, with his successful revival of Leeds taking them to the top of the Super League table. Just under 18 months after stepping into the role at Headingley, Arthur’s Rhinos are now leading the ladder this late in the season for the first time since 2020. This achievement highlights his coaching prowess and strategic mindset.
Despite missing out on the PNG Chiefs job last week, with Willie Peters being appointed as the expansion side’s first NRL coach, Arthur remains a strong candidate for a return to the NRL. His contract with Leeds is set to expire at the end of 2026, leaving the door open for potential opportunities back in Australia.
One possible destination for Arthur could be Manly, following the recent axing of Anthony Seibold. The topic of Seibold’s replacement was discussed at a recent Manly board meeting, but the club is also keen to give interim mentor Kieran Foran time to prove himself. Foran has already made a significant impact, impressing officials with his maturity and delivering a commanding 52-18 victory over the Dolphins on Thursday night.
Manly’s upcoming fixtures include matches against St George Illawarra, North Queensland, and Parramatta, providing Foran with ample opportunities to stake his claim for the head coaching role. Even if the club decides to pursue a different path, Foran will be given the chance to coach out the year and will remain on the coaching staff in 2027.
Manly’s Preference for a “Manly Man”
Manly’s management has been clear about their preference for a coach with strong ties to the club. All eight of the Sea Eagles’ premierships have been achieved under a “Manly man” in charge. This tradition is expected to continue, with two-time Manly premiership winner Matt Ballin emerging as the early favorite.
Ballin, who is currently on Michael Maguire’s staff in Brisbane after a previous stint in Manly’s coaching ranks, is believed to be interested in the role. His strong support from the club’s old boys further strengthens his position as a potential candidate.
Another name that has been mentioned is Brad Arthur. Although he spent only one year at Manly as an assistant in 2013, his popularity among players led him to recruit Kieran Foran, Anthony Watmough, and several other Sea Eagles to Parramatta. Arthur’s track record of turning around the Eels, taking them from cellar-dwellers to finalists and even reaching the grand final in 2022, adds to his appeal.
Although Arthur left the Eels in 2024 due to the need for change, his success at Leeds has only enhanced his chances of an NRL return. Even if he misses out on the Manly job, he is likely to remain a contender for any other NRL openings this year.
Other Coaching Situations in the NRL
Meanwhile, North Queensland coach Todd Payten started the season under immense pressure but has managed to secure back-to-back wins for the Cowboys in rounds three and four. This has provided some relief and renewed confidence in his leadership.
St George Illawarra coach Shane Flanagan admitted this weekend that he needs more wins to keep his job. With the competition fierce, all coaches are under pressure to deliver results and maintain their positions.
