Storm Forward Hospitalised After Suspected Stroke
The Melbourne Storm rugby league club is grappling with a significant medical concern after prop Tui Kamikamica was admitted to hospital following a suspected stroke. The 31-year-old Fijian international experienced a medical episode on Monday, prompting an immediate rush to hospital. The club has since confirmed the distressing diagnosis and provided an update on his condition.
“He has undergone treatment for a suspected stroke and is recovering in hospital,” a statement from the Melbourne Storm read. “Tui is receiving the best possible care and is being supported by hospital specialists, alongside the club’s medical staff.”
The severity of the situation means Kamikamica’s immediate playing future is uncertain. This latest blow comes at a particularly challenging time for the Storm, who have already been dealt a serious blow with fellow forward Eliesa Katoa ruled out for the remainder of the season. Katoa required brain surgery due to bleeding on the brain, a consequence of a series of head knocks sustained while representing Tonga in November last year. Coach Craig Bellamy has expressed his concern regarding Katoa’s potential return to the NRL, admitting he is unsure if the 26-year-old will be able to play professionally again.
Kamikamica, who captains Fiji, featured for the Melbourne Storm in their recent NRL clash against the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday night. He came off the bench, contributing 25 minutes of game time during the closely contested match. The team had travelled back from Townsville on Sunday, following a disappointing loss where they surrendered a 10-point lead. This defeat marked the first time this season the Storm had suffered back-to-back losses.
The Fijian prop, a father to a young son also named Tui, had recently committed his future to the Storm, signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the 2026 season. Prior to this, there had been speculation linking him with a move to the UK Super League. With the departure of Nelson Asofa-Solomona, who is pursuing a career in boxing, Kamikamica had become an increasingly vital component of the Storm’s formidable forward pack.
Since making his NRL debut with Melbourne in 2017, Kamikamica has played 142 matches for the club, including appearances in their last two grand final campaigns. He has consistently spoken about his deep connection to his homeland and his pride in representing Fiji.
The Storm are now preparing to travel to Sydney on Thursday afternoon for their upcoming Good Friday fixture. They are scheduled to face the undefeated Penrith Panthers at CommBank Stadium.
