Conman’s £11 Million Pensioner Scam: A Tale of Luxury and Ruin
A conman has been exposed for preying on vulnerable pensioners, siphoning a staggering £11 million from over 100 victims to fund a lavish lifestyle, complete with exotic holidays to Mexico. Steven Long, 59, cultivated an image of a trustworthy financial guru, promising to safeguard the nest eggs of the elderly against inheritance tax and the looming costs of care homes. Instead, their hard-earned savings were channelled into risky investments and personal luxuries.
Long’s elaborate scheme involved presenting himself as the “consummate professional,” delivering seminars in hotels across the country specifically targeting retired individuals. He masterfully convinced many of his victims to place their ultimate trust in him, with some even transferring ownership of their homes to his firm, Universal Wealth Preservation, or appointing him as the executor of their wills. These desperate measures were taken with the promise of securing their future and ensuring peace of mind in their later years.
However, the reality was a stark betrayal. The money entrusted to Long was not used for prudent financial planning. Instead, it funded his and his wife’s personal debts and, more outrageously, financed luxurious trips to Mexico, where he reportedly owned property. This stark contrast between the promised security and the actual exploitation highlights the depth of his deception.

The long arm of the law eventually caught up with Long. In 2018, he faced a jail sentence of eight months for contempt of court. This earlier conviction stemmed from his refusal to disclose the whereabouts of the missing funds following a civil case. Undeterred by this, Long continued his fraudulent activities.
Just last week, on the cusp of a trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court, Long finally admitted his guilt. He pleaded guilty to two fraud charges, spanning a decade between 2008 and 2018. This admission marks a significant step towards justice for his victims, though he now faces further sentencing for these grave offences.
The Devastating Impact on Victims
Detective Constable Lisa Hunt, who spearheaded an eight-year investigation into Long’s criminal enterprise, painted a grim picture of the consequences. She stated that Long deliberately targeted individuals who placed their complete faith in him, many of whom were elderly, vulnerable, or meticulously planning for their families’ financial security.
“Long callously exploited that trust,” DC Hunt remarked, underscoring the predatory nature of his actions. The repercussions for the victims have been profound, leaving them and their loved ones grappling with devastating financial and emotional fallout. “Some lost the security they had spent a lifetime building,” she added, highlighting the irreparable damage caused.
The investigation revealed that Long’s victims suffered more than just financial losses. The emotional toll of discovering such a deep betrayal by someone they believed was acting in their best interests has been immense. Many were left in precarious financial situations, their carefully laid plans for retirement and their families’ futures in ruins.
Long’s Deceptive Tactics
Long’s success in defrauding so many stemmed from his sophisticated and manipulative approach. He understood the anxieties and aspirations of his target demographic.
- Targeted Seminars: By holding seminars in hotels, he created an environment that appeared professional and accessible to retired individuals.
- Promise of Security: His core message revolved around protecting assets from taxes and care home fees, two significant concerns for the elderly.
- Building Trust: He cultivated an image of expertise and trustworthiness, encouraging victims to hand over control of their finances and even their assets.
- Exploiting Vulnerability: The elderly and those concerned about their legacy were particularly susceptible to his promises of safeguarding their wealth.
The Road Ahead
While Long has pleaded guilty, his sentencing is yet to be determined. The legal proceedings aim to hold him accountable for the immense harm he has inflicted. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence and scepticism when entrusting financial matters to individuals, especially those targeting vulnerable populations. The long-term consequences for the victims will undoubtedly be significant, and the legal system’s final judgment will be keenly awaited.
