Ford Hints at Revolutionary Raptor Off-Roader Set to Redefine Performance
Ford’s top brass has been dropping tantalising hints about a groundbreaking new production vehicle that promises to shatter expectations in the performance automotive world. Speaking at the 2026 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed that the company is actively developing a road-going version of its extreme, Mustang-engined Raptor off-road racer, a vehicle he boldly declared will “break all the rules.”
Farley, addressing media in Melbourne, gestured towards a showroom-ready iteration of the vehicle, positioning it as a cornerstone of Ford’s future performance strategy. While specific details and a definitive launch timeline remain under wraps, the message is clear: Ford is looking to the future with a no-holds-barred approach to performance.
“I don’t want to go too much into it, other than to say Kumar [Galhotra, Ford chief operating officer] and the team really understand the invisible line between off-road and on-road supercars is blurring,” Farley explained. He elaborated on the technological advancements that are making this convergence possible, stating, “And with partially electric powertrains and digitally controlled damping – and torque vectoring technology – you can now imagine a digitally enabled super vehicle that is equally capable off-road and on-road.”
The CEO remained coy about the exact styling of the forthcoming model, but emphasised Ford’s unique position to lead such an innovation. “What the silhouette looks like, and all the details, we’ll continue to look at, but if there’s a company in the world that would break the rules and do something like that, I think it should be Ford.”
This vision aligns with Farley’s previous discussions about cultivating a distinct “Raptor” sub-brand and aiming to position Ford as “the Porsche of off-road.” This ambitious strategy suggests a significant shift in Ford’s performance vehicle portfolio.
A New Era for Ford Performance: Moving Beyond Traditional Hot Hatches
In line with this forward-thinking strategy, Farley also confirmed that Ford has no plans to reintroduce enthusiast-focused models like the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and Focus RS hot hatches. The company’s focus is firmly on innovation and creating vehicles that offer a broader spectrum of driving enjoyment.
“In the forward world of technology and enthusiast, I don’t think customers need to make such difficult choices between fun off-road and fun on-road,” Farley articulated. He stressed the desire for a new paradigm in performance vehicles, stating, “So, if we were going to do something like that, I would insist the team invent, maybe something of a new formula you haven’t seen yet.”

The Raptor T1+: A Glimpse into Off-Roading Prowess
The blueprint for this new breed of performance vehicle appears to be heavily influenced by Ford’s purpose-built racing machines. The formidable Raptor T1+ rally raid vehicle was a standout exhibit at the Ford display during the Grand Prix. Still bearing the marks of its recent competition, the mud and dust serving as a testament to its capabilities, the T1+ represents Ford’s return to the pinnacle of motorsport in partnership with Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls teams.
Developed by M-Sport, Ford’s long-time World Rally Championship partner, the T1+ is a ground-up design engineered for the rigours of long-distance rally raids. Its heart is a dry-sump version of Ford’s potent 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, a powerplant also found in competition Mustangs and related to the 5.4-litre V8s used in Australian Supercars. This is mated to a precise six-speed sequential gearbox.
The T1+’s striking exterior is constructed from lightweight carbon-fibre panels draped over a robust steel spaceframe, striking a critical balance between weight reduction and extreme durability essential for demanding off-road excursions.
Advanced Suspension and Ground Clearance: The Off-Road Advantage
Underpinning the T1+’s extraordinary off-road credentials is its sophisticated chassis. Featuring independent double-wishbone suspension at both the front and rear, coupled with adjustable coil-overs, the racer boasts an impressive 350mm of wheel travel. This allows for a formidable 70-degree approach angle and a substantial 400mm of ground clearance, enabling it to conquer the most challenging terrains.

Current Raptor Offerings in Australia and Abroad
While the upcoming radical Raptor model is still on the horizon, Ford currently offers a single Raptor model in Australian showrooms: the highly capable Ranger Raptor V6. This popular ute is already a formidable off-roader, equipped with long-travel suspension, a respectable 32-degree approach angle, and 272mm of ground clearance.
Internationally, Ford’s Raptor lineage extends to other iconic models, including the F-150 Raptor and the Bronco Raptor, further cementing the Raptor nameplate’s reputation for uncompromising off-road performance. The company’s commitment to pushing boundaries with the Raptor brand suggests that the future holds even more exciting and rule-breaking innovations for off-road enthusiasts and performance car aficionados alike.
