Aussie Influencers Paid to Smear Illinois Dem: Report

The shadowy world of political campaigning has taken a new turn, with reports emerging of a “dark money” group attempting to influence a primary election in Illinois through social media influencers. The group, known as Democracy Unmuted, is alleged to have offered significant sums of money to influencers in exchange for negative posts targeting progressive Democrat candidate Kat Abughazaleh.

Abughazaleh is currently vying for the Democratic nomination in Illinois’s 9th congressional district, a seat soon to be vacated by long-serving Representative Jan Schakowsky. Facing a crowded field of 15 other Democratic contenders, Abughazaleh’s campaign has now become the subject of an alleged covert operation aimed at tarnishing her image.

Influencer Approaches and Ethical Dilemmas

One of the influencers reportedly approached by Democracy Unmuted was Amanda Informed, a popular TikTok and Instagram personality. According to reports, she was offered $1,500 for a single post criticising Abughazaleh. The memo allegedly sent to influencers outlined the group’s desired message: to “encourage voters to look past viral personalities and ask real questions about who is running and why.” The materials also reportedly disparaged Abughazaleh, labelling her as someone from a wealthy background who lacks understanding of her district and suggesting her campaign prioritises “attention rather than impact.”

Amanda Informed, however, stated she declined the offer due to the opaque nature of the funding. She expressed discomfort with accepting money from an undisclosed source, stating, “The money didn’t feel right coming from someone who’s not disclosing where the money is coming from… That’s not something that I want to be involved in. I want to make sure that it’s coming from a source that is not doing nefarious things like interfering with elections.” Her refusal and subsequent reporting of the approach have shed light on the methods employed by Democracy Unmuted.

A Pattern of Undisclosed Influence?

While Amanda Informed rejected the offer, there are indications that other influencers may have accepted. Justin Kralemann, a Missouri-based political influencer known online as “The Woke Ginger,” is reported to have echoed Democracy Unmuted’s talking points verbatim in a recent Instagram and TikTok post. Although he reportedly mispronounced Abughazaleh’s name during the video, he later denied being compensated for the content.

The Enigma of Democracy Unmuted

Democracy Unmuted’s online presence is notably recent, with its website only having been registered a fortnight ago. Matt Anthes, founder of the digital political advocacy firm Advocators, described the group to MS NOW as comprising “individuals from the [Illinois] area who have served in the highest offices and been at top of their game in the media.” Anthes confirmed his role as the facilitator of the “dark money” offer but remained tight-lipped about the identities of those behind Democracy Unmuted. He stated, “We don’t comment on or disclose the identity of our clients. What we can tell you is that all of our dealings and practices are fully compliant with FEC rules and regulations, including those at our creative agency partner, Upstart Factory.”

The Broader Implications of Dark Money in Politics

This incident highlights a growing concern about the influence of “dark money” in political campaigns. Abigail Bellows, senior policy director of anti-corruption at Common Cause, pointed to what she described as “weak campaign finance laws” that facilitate such social media operations, rendering them entirely legal.

“Dark money groups have grown to exercise tremendous influence,” Bellows commented. “With a lot of these competitive races, these groups can spring up overnight. These dark money groups use these shadowy vehicles for political participation that really undercuts voters. It just breeds distrust.”

Campaign’s Response and Voter Concerns

Kat Abughazaleh’s campaign has vehemently denied the claims made against her, labelling them as defamatory. A statement released by the campaign read, “We have become aware of a coordinated influencer campaign attacking Kat Abughazaleh that appears to be funded through opaque entities exploiting loopholes in federal election law. The materials being circulated are filled with false and defamatory claims about Kat’s background and campaign.”

The campaign further articulated its concerns, stating, “At a minimum, this raises serious questions about transparency and whether voters in Illinois’ 9th District are being targeted by undisclosed money and potentially foreign-linked actors across social media platforms.” The controversy underscores the ongoing debate surrounding transparency in political advertising and the potential for undisclosed financial interests to sway public opinion, particularly in the fast-paced and often unregulated digital landscape.
