Australia has officially crossed a significant demographic threshold, with its population now exceeding 28 million people. This remarkable milestone, as estimated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), signifies a nation experiencing sustained growth. The ABS calculations indicate that, on average, Australia welcomes a new resident every 75 seconds, a figure that accounts for births, deaths, and international arrivals.
The journey from 27 million to the 28 million mark took just over two years. At the close of 2025, the Australian population was estimated to be 27,594,464. This recent surge in numbers represents a substantial increase of nearly 2.5 million people since 2020.
