Australia Welcomes 28 Millionth Resident: A Nation on the Move

Australia has officially crossed a significant demographic threshold, with its population now exceeding 28 million people. This remarkable milestone, as estimated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), signifies a nation experiencing sustained growth. The ABS calculations indicate that, on average, Australia welcomes a new resident every 75 seconds, a figure that accounts for births, deaths, and international arrivals.

The journey from 27 million to the 28 million mark took just over two years. At the close of 2025, the Australian population was estimated to be 27,594,464. This recent surge in numbers represents a substantial increase of nearly 2.5 million people since 2020. It’s worth noting that the COVID-19 pandemic had a noticeable, albeit temporary, impact on population growth. Reduced migration and an increase in deaths directly attributed to the virus contributed to a slowdown during that period. However, the nation’s growth trajectory has since rebounded strongly.

Looking ahead, current projections suggest that Australia’s population is on track to reach 29 million sometime in 2028, with the possibility of hitting the 30 million mark by 2031. This continued expansion underscores the dynamic nature of Australia’s demographic landscape.

Shifting Sands of Migration: India Overtakes England as Top Birthplace

A significant aspect of Australia’s population growth is its multicultural fabric, with a substantial proportion of its residents born overseas. For many decades, England stood as the predominant country of origin for migrants choosing to make Australia their home. However, recent data reveals a notable shift in this long-standing trend. India has now emerged as the most common country of birth for Australians, other than Australia itself.

As of June 30 last year, the numbers painted a clear picture: an estimated 971,020 Australian citizens were born in India, narrowly surpassing the 970,950 individuals born in England. This change in migration patterns reflects evolving global connections and opportunities.

Immigration: A Vital Pillar for Australia’s Economy and Society

Following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia experienced a sharp increase in immigration. In response, the federal government has been focused on ensuring this growth remains at a sustainable level. Despite these considerations, there is a strong consensus regarding the indispensable role of immigrants and migration in bolstering Australia’s economy and enriching its social fabric.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has consistently emphasised the critical importance of migration. He highlighted practical concerns, such as the ongoing need for labour in key sectors.

  • “You need to make sure that we don’t end up with our farmers not being able to get people to pick their fruit,” he stated during a press conference earlier this year. This underscores the direct link between migration and the functioning of essential industries, ensuring agricultural produce reaches consumers.

  • Furthermore, Minister Burke pointed to the vital contribution of migration to the healthcare system, particularly in aged care. “You need to make sure that you don’t wreck your aged care system,” he added, illustrating how a robust migration program is essential for maintaining and improving the quality of care for Australia’s aging population.

These statements reflect a nuanced approach to population growth, balancing the need for sustainable levels with the recognition that migration is not merely an economic driver but a fundamental component of Australia’s social infrastructure and future prosperity. The nation’s growing population is a testament to its enduring appeal as a destination for people seeking opportunity and a better life.
