Cameraman Suffers Bloody Injury After Collision During UFL Game

A sideline cameraman for Fox experienced a painful collision during a UFL football match, leaving him bloodied and requiring medical attention. Dave Hoffman was positioned close to the action at Historic Crew Stadium on Sunday night, capturing footage of the game between the Louisville Kings and the Columbus Aviators.

The incident unfolded when a Louisville player, moving at speed, careened into Hoffman on the sideline. The impact sent the cameraman tumbling to the turf, with the collision also involving the team’s bench. Those nearby immediately expressed concern as Hoffman was seen in pain, clutching a wound on his head.

Commentator Kevin Kugler, as Fox replayed the incident, described the moment: “So, watch Dave Hoffman, our cameraman right on the sideline. And Dave just gets blasted.” His broadcast partner, Joe Klatt, acknowledged Hoffman’s resilience, adding, “But Dave’s tough, though.”

Shortly after, a different camera captured Hoffman receiving treatment. A medic was seen applying a bandage to a cut on his head. Despite the injury, Hoffman maintained a lighthearted demeanour, playfully blowing a kiss towards the camera as he was tended to.

“Yes, Dave,” Klatt continued, highlighting Hoffman’s dedication. “Dave works with us on college football on Big Noon. There he is. Nothing’s gonna keep him down… I guarantee you Dave is telling those guys, like, ‘Guys, I’m good. Don’t you worry about me.’” Klatt lauded Hoffman’s commitment, stating, “Dave Hoffman is an absolute soldier, man. He works his butt off. He’s terrific at what he does. Love seeing him in the fall. Love seeing him out here at the UFL.” Kugler echoed this sentiment, assuring viewers, “And you’ll see him again in the fall, because that one little shot’s not going to keep him down.”

This unfortunate event is not an isolated incident for those working behind the scenes in professional sports. Cameramen and other media personnel often find themselves in precarious positions while attempting to capture critical moments.

Close Calls in the World of Sports Broadcasting

The risks involved in covering live sporting events have been highlighted on several occasions. For instance, during last month’s PGA Championship, American golfer Wyndham Clark narrowly avoided a serious incident involving a spectator and a TV camera.

The mishap occurred on the second day of the championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia. Clark, who was navigating the thick rough along the 11th fairway, attempted to play his shot. Approximately 50 spectators, including a cameraman, had gathered around Clark and his caddie, unaware of the potential danger.

As the former US Open champion struck the ball, it spun out of the long grass, veering sharply to his left. The ball, travelling at speed, struck the lens of the cameraman’s camera, which was balanced on his shoulder, from a distance of only about 10 yards. The impact jostled the cameraman significantly.

A young girl standing to the cameraman’s right was visibly startled by the near miss, instinctively ducking and covering her head. A video clip shared on social media appeared to show the ball ricocheting off the camera before landing somewhere to the left. Thankfully, no one sustained any injuries, but the incident served as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those in close proximity to the action.

These instances underscore the dedication and bravery of sports journalists and cameramen who often put themselves in harm’s way to bring viewers the most compelling coverage. While the UFL cameraman’s injury was a direct collision, the PGA Championship incident highlights the unpredictable nature of ball sports and the need for heightened awareness from all involved.
