Brian To’o’s Unforgettable Try and the Impact on Team Dynamics
Brian To’o delivered one of the most memorable tries of the NRL season during a thrilling match between the Panthers and the Roostes. The winger’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, with a solo try that showcased his exceptional skills and creativity.
To’o’s try began with a clever kick that sent him behind the defensive line. He then executed another kick to take him around fullback James Tedesco, demonstrating his ability to read the game and make split-second decisions. After regathering the ball, he planted it down for the try, leaving fans and opponents in awe.
In a post-game interview, To’o credited Mary Fowler, Nathan Cleary’s girlfriend and a Matildas superstar, for helping him perfect his kicking technique. “You wouldn’t believe it,” he said. “Mary Fowler, my sister, taught me a few tricks, and then passed it from Clez (Cleary) down to me. They gave me the tools and techniques to do that. That was a one-off, it’ll never happen again.”
Fowler is set to play in the Asian Cup final against Japan on Saturday night. To’o wished her well, saying, “All the best sister. God bless.”
Panthers’ Dominant Performance and Player Roster Changes
To’o’s try was just one of seven scored by the Panthers in a dominant victory over the Roosters. Winger Thomas Jenkins was instrumental, scoring four tries himself. This performance makes it increasingly unlikely that Izack Tago will be able to force his way back into the starting side anytime soon.
Jenkins was left out during the Panthers’ finals run last year but was picked ahead of Tago to start 2026. His impressive form has seen him score eight tries in just three games so far.
The situation with Tago mirrors that of Gehamat Shibasaki at the Broncos. Shibasaki, who became a State of Origin and Test player in 2025, has struggled this season, leading to his omission from the team for Friday night’s game against the Melbourne Storm.
Grant Anderson made a solid debut on the wing for the Broncos, running for 163 metres from 19 carries. However, Deine Mariner’s shift from the wing to left centre proved more impactful. Mariner, who took Shibasaki’s spot, showed significant improvement, recording five tackle-breaks and running for 151 metres from 15 carries. His performance helped strengthen the Broncos’ previously weak left-edge defence, as he made 17 tackles and only missed one.
Brisbane managed to beat a Storm outfit that had scored 98 points in its first two games. Shibasaki was among four players who didn’t get any game-time on Friday night. Coach Michael Maguire opted to use only two of his interchange options, stating, “Because of the players I have and the experience some of the players have had, I just felt that it was the right thing for us to do.”
