Britain faces energy crisis as Reeves’ spending sparks borrowing surge

UK Faces Global Bond Market Pressure

The United Kingdom has experienced significant pressure from global bond markets, with borrowing costs reaching an 18-year high. This situation has raised concerns about the ability of the Labour Party to support families dealing with a £2,000 energy crisis.

As Rachel Reeves faced criticism for “spending like a drunken sailor,” the Office for National Statistics reported that the state borrowed an additional £14.3 billion in the previous month, exceeding expectations by £6 billion. This marked the largest February deficit on record, excluding the pandemic period. The situation worsened as tensions in the Middle East caused oil and gas prices to rise, leading to fears of “Trumpflation” impacting the economy.

Record Highs in Gilt Yields

The ten-year gilt yields, a key indicator of government borrowing costs, reached 5% for the first time since before the Lehman Brothers collapse during the 2008 financial crisis. This milestone has led to warnings that “the bond vigilantes are after the UK once more.” This raises doubts about whether the Chancellor can afford to assist households facing a £332 increase in energy bills, which could push total costs to nearly £2,000 this summer.

Families are also dealing with higher mortgage costs, as the Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates three times over the next six months, potentially reaching 4.5%. Britain is the only G7 country with a ten-year bond yield above 5%, which contradicts Sir Keir Starmer’s claims of better preparedness for a volatile world.

Economic Challenges for Labour

Higher borrowing costs pose a significant challenge for Ms. Reeves, as they increase the cost of servicing the UK’s massive £2.9 trillion debt.

Rises in bond yields also result in more expensive mortgages and business loans. Treasury minister James Murray emphasized that Labour has the “right economic plan,” stating, “Because of the choices we made before the conflict in the Middle East began, we are better prepared for a more volatile world.”

However, Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride criticized Labour, saying, “What planet are Labour on?” He argued that the fragility of the economy would be exposed due to the external economic shock from the Middle East conflict. He pointed out that “borrowing keeps climbing” despite Labour’s tax hikes, suggesting these were political choices rather than global inevitabilities.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch accused Rachel Reeves of “maxing out the nation’s credit card with record borrowing and runaway welfare spending.” She noted that Britain is now more exposed to global shocks, with debt costs spiking.

Impact on Financial Markets

The ten-year gilt yield rose to 5.02% yesterday, putting UK bonds on course for their worst month since Liz Truss was in power. While bond yields have not risen as quickly this month, they remain higher than before, with the government paying more to borrow than at any time since Gordon Brown was PM.

The surge in borrowing costs highlights the difficulty for Labour in funding a cost-of-living bailout. Investors are concerned about how the struggling economy can handle another inflation surge and higher interest rates.

Simon French, chief economist and head of research at City investment bank Panmure Liberum, warned that Britain is already paying a so-called “moron premium” to borrow due to economic mismanagement. He cautioned that an expensive bailout of household and business energy bills would further increase borrowing costs. He also raised alarms about higher spending and borrowing if Angela Rayner were to replace Sir Keir in No 10.

Market Performance

The FTSE 100 index dropped by 145 points, closing below the 10,000-mark for the first time since the start of the year. This reflects the broader economic challenges facing the UK and the ongoing concerns about its financial stability.
