Cucurella Linked with Summer Switch to Atletico Madrid Amidst Chelsea Uncertainty

Marc Cucurella, the Spanish left-back currently plying his trade at Chelsea, is reportedly a target for Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the upcoming summer transfer window. This speculation follows a period of fluctuating form and recent comments from Cucurella himself that have cast a shadow over his long-term commitment to the London club.

Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 for a reported £63 million, a fee that at the time made him the most expensive left-back in football history. During his four seasons at Stamford Bridge, he has accumulated 163 appearances across all competitions. While his debut season was met with some challenges, he has since been a part of the squad that clinched the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup.

However, recent weeks have seen an intensification of doubts surrounding Cucurella’s future. The 27-year-old has been vocal in his criticism of Chelsea’s decision to part ways with manager Enzo Maresca and has also pointed to a perceived lack of experience within the current squad. The impending arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager is hoped to bring much-needed stability, but questions persist about Cucurella’s desire to remain a Blue beyond the current campaign.

Interest from Spain Intensifies

According to reports, both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have initiated contact with individuals representing Cucurella to explore the feasibility of a summer transfer. Despite signing a new contract less than 12 months ago, it is understood that Cucurella is “willing” to seek a move during the transfer window. Chelsea are reportedly not expected to block a departure if a suitor meets their valuation of the player.

Atletico Madrid are considered one of the more likely destinations for Cucurella, and it appears he would be warmly welcomed by Diego Simeone’s squad. Marc Pubill, a teammate of Cucurella’s at the Spanish national team’s World Cup training camp, has openly admitted to encouraging a move to the Madrid club.

When asked if he had urged Cucurella to join him at Atletico Madrid, Pubill responded with a resounding “Yes, of course, I’ve already told him!” When pressed on Cucurella’s reaction, Pubill offered a wry smile and simply stated, “Nothing.”

Atleti’s Pursuit and Cucurella’s Past Statements

Atletico Madrid’s sporting director, Mateu Alemany, is reportedly at the forefront of the club’s pursuit. He is said to have personally engaged with those close to the left-back to discuss a potential transfer from London to Madrid. Despite the promising performances of Matteo Ruggeri at the club, Atletico have identified the left-back position as a key area for reinforcement in the upcoming transfer window.

Cucurella himself has previously spoken about the possibility of returning to Spanish football. Having risen through the youth ranks at Barcelona, he has not shied away from the idea of a homecoming.

“Spain is always Spain. It is where I grew up and you always think about going back,” Cucurella stated in February. However, he also indicated a preference to delay such a move. “But I would [prefer to] leave it for a few years down the line. I am very happy here and it is a great life experience.”

When specifically questioned about a potential move to Barcelona, Cucurella acknowledged the allure. “It is clear if that situation did arise, it is hard to turn down, but I would have to consider it in the end,” he admitted. He stressed the importance of family in any decision, stating, “It is not just me, I also have to think about my family and together we would have to decide what’s best for us.” Despite these considerations, he reiterated his current focus: “As I have said before, right now I am not thinking about that. If it comes, it will come, and we will see what decision is made.”

Cucurella’s current contract with Chelsea is not set to expire until June 2028, providing the club with some leverage in any potential negotiations.

Broader Chelsea Squad Uncertainty

Cucurella is not the only Chelsea player facing an uncertain future. Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez have also been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks and months. When approached by journalists last month, Xabi Alonso was unable to definitively rule out the possibility of any of these trio being sold.

The coming transfer window promises to be a period of significant change at Stamford Bridge, with several key players potentially moving on as the club looks to rebuild under new management. The situation surrounding Marc Cucurella and his potential return to Spain will undoubtedly be a storyline to watch closely.
