Brisbane Commuters Face Extended Delays Due to Rail Closures
Brisbane commuters have been experiencing significant disruptions as scheduled rail closures continue to affect public transport routes across the city. Hundreds of people have been waiting in long queues on suburban streets for buses, highlighting growing frustration among travelers.
The disruptions began earlier this month when key rail lines were closed for maintenance. Originally planned to last until the end of April, the closures have now been extended by at least four days due to an industrial dispute. This has caused further complications for daily commuters who rely on the train system for their journeys.
On Monday morning, commuters on Brisbane’s northside expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of effective planning to manage the impact of the rail line closures. Many reported inadequate bus services and long waiting times, which have made their commutes even more challenging.
One commuter traveling from Narangba to Bowen Hills shared their experience of disembarking at Northgate Station and joining a queue of approximately 300 passengers waiting for a bus. As of 9:15 am, they had already waited over half an hour without any sign of a bus arriving.
“There are not enough buses,” the commuter said. “They [Queensland Rail] know what time the trains get to Northgate but have no buses waiting.”
The passenger also criticized the planning, stating that Queensland Rail should have anticipated the issue since the same problem occurred the previous week.
Another passenger commented on Queensland Rail’s Facebook post, expressing concern over the frequency of buses. They mentioned that one bus every 10 minutes was insufficient to meet the demand.
“If the train is almost full at Caboolture, it’s obvious how many buses are needed,” the commuter said. “Queensland Rail is responsible for logistics during rail disruptions, not Translink. There’s no communication for those who need a seat and can’t stand for long.”
A different commuter shared their experience of being packed into a bus with no air-conditioning, having traveled from Strathpine since 7 am. They arrived at Bowen Hills at 8:50 am and still hadn’t managed to catch a train to their destination on the southside.
“Nearly two hours and yet to get a train,” they said.
Response from Queensland Rail
In response to the complaints, a spokesperson for Queensland Rail acknowledged the challenges faced by commuters and stated that passengers had been advised to allow extra time for their journeys during the period of disrupted service. They also mentioned that customer feedback was being taken into consideration.
“We are working with Translink to adjust those routes and allocate extra buses, based on availability,” the spokesperson added.
Buses will replace trains between several stations, including Northgate and Bowen Hills, as well as Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road, from Monday to Wednesday this week. Trains on the Sunshine Coast line will run between Gympie North and Caboolture, while Doomben line trains will operate between Doomben and Eagle Junction.
From Thursday to Sunday, buses will replace trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road stations. Track closures and disruptions are expected to continue until April 30.
Ongoing Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the efforts to manage the disruptions, many commuters remain dissatisfied with the current arrangements. The lack of clear communication and adequate bus services has led to widespread frustration, particularly among those who rely on public transport for their daily commute.
As the rail closures continue, it remains to be seen whether the additional measures introduced by Queensland Rail and Translink will be sufficient to address the needs of all passengers. For now, commuters are left navigating a complex and often unreliable transport system, with long waits and limited options adding to their daily struggles.
