Distillers Protest NAFDAC Sealings Amidst Sachet Alcohol Ban Controversy
For the fifth time this year, distillers operating under the umbrella of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOYS) staged a vocal protest outside the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) headquarters on Tuesday. The demonstration centres on the continued sealing of their companies, a direct consequence of the ban imposed on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles with capacities below 200ml.
Employees from various levels of the affected companies, encompassing both junior and senior staff, took to the streets. They effectively barricaded the main entrance to the NAFDAC office, located along the busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. Their presence was marked by a sea of placards, each bearing messages that articulated their grievances. Slogans such as “Tinubu does not want jobs to be lost,” “Stop destroying local manufacturers,” and “NAFDAC should release products put on hold” clearly conveyed their demands to the regulatory body.
The protesters gathered in significant numbers, their voices amplified by solidarity songs. They actively prevented vehicular access to the NAFDAC premises, underscoring the seriousness of their protest. As the situation unfolded, there was no immediate official statement from the protesters to the press, nor did any NAFDAC staff emerge to engage with the demonstrators.
This ongoing industrial action is widely understood to be a direct response to the protracted dispute surrounding the ban on sachet alcohol and small PET bottle beverages. The distillers maintain that they have received assurances that the Federal Government has ordered a cessation of enforcement activities related to this ban. However, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, has publicly stated that no such official communication has been received by the agency. This discrepancy in information has fuelled the frustration and determination of the protesting workers.
Key Demands and Grievances:
- Reversal of Company Sealings: The primary demand is the immediate unsealing of their manufacturing facilities.
- Lifting of the Ban: Protesters are calling for the rescission of the ban on sachet and sub-200ml PET bottle alcoholic beverages.
- Government Assurances Ignored: They believe that enforcement continues despite alleged government directives to halt such actions.
- Job Security Concerns: The placards highlight fears of widespread job losses within the local manufacturing sector.
The distillers have previously voiced strong opposition to the ban. In earlier demonstrations, they issued a stern warning, threatening to escalate their actions and “take over the streets” if the ban was not repealed. This latest protest signifies a continuation and intensification of their campaign against the regulatory measures.
The situation highlights a significant tension between regulatory objectives aimed at public health and safety, and the economic realities faced by local manufacturers and their employees. The ban, intended to curb the consumption of potentially harmful products, has inadvertently created a crisis for businesses that rely on these product formats for a substantial portion of their market share. The continued stalemate between the distillers and NAFDAC underscores the urgent need for clear communication and a resolution that addresses both public health concerns and the economic well-being of the industry.
