Gout Gout Eyes Redemption Against Lachlan Kennedy in Melbourne 200m Showdown
Sprint sensation Gout Gout is fired up and ready to settle the score with fellow Australian Lachlan Kennedy in a highly anticipated 200-metre clash at the upcoming Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne on March 28. The showdown promises to be a thrilling display of Australian sprinting prowess, with Gout explicitly stating his desire for revenge after a previous defeat.
Last year, the pair went head-to-head at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, a race where Kennedy pulled off a surprise victory over the then-favourite Gout. Reflecting on the experience, Gout recalled the electric atmosphere. “It was a great meet last year and an awesome vibe down on the track,” he commented. “I know it’s going to be the same again this year. Lachie ran great last year, so for sure I’m out for revenge.”
At just 18 years old, Gout has already etched his name in Australian athletics history. He holds the national 200-metre record with an impressive time of 20.02 seconds, a blistering performance set in the Czech Republic in June of last year. This remarkable run not only improved his own personal best but also continued a trend of him lowering his own benchmark in his signature event. His dominance is underscored by the fact that he has broken Peter Norman’s long-standing national record of 20.06 seconds, a benchmark that had stood for an incredible 56 years.

Kennedy, a formidable competitor in his own right, is no stranger to success. He is a silver medallist at the World Indoor Championships over the 60-metre distance. In his first race since July, Kennedy kicked off his season with a strong performance at the Hobart Track Classic last weekend, clocking a time of 20.46 seconds to secure victory. His personal best in the 200 metres stands at 20.26 seconds, the very time that saw him narrowly edge out Gout in their memorable Melbourne duel last year.
However, the upcoming Melbourne showdown won’t just be a two-man race. Adding an international flavour to the competition, Irish-born sprinter Benjamin Richardson is set to challenge the Australian duo. Richardson, who boasts a personal best of 19.99 seconds in the 200 metres, was born in Dublin but honed his athletic talents in South Africa. His presence guarantees an even more compelling and competitive race.

Meanwhile, in other significant sprinting news, American superstar Sha’Carri Richardson has been confirmed to compete at the prestigious Stawell Gift in early April. The 100-metre world champion and Olympic silver medallist, who also clinched gold in the 4x100m relay at the 2024 Paris Games, will be a major drawcard for the event. She will be joined by compatriot and former 100-metre world champion Christian Coleman, further elevating the international calibre of the Stawell Gift.
While Gout and Kennedy were prominent figures at the Stawell Gift last year, they are not expected to participate in this year’s meet, which is scheduled to take place from April 4-6 in the Wimmera region of Victoria. Their focus appears to be firmly fixed on their upcoming duel in Melbourne, where Gout will be looking to exact his revenge and assert his dominance on the Australian 200-metre scene. The Maurie Plant Meet is shaping up to be a must-watch event for athletics fans across the country.
