Melbourne Home Targeted in Reckless Drive-By Shooting
Victoria Police are appealing for public assistance as they hunt for a gunman who recorded himself firing shots at a residential property in Craigieburn, a northern suburb of Melbourne. The brazen incident, which occurred around 1 pm on October 24, saw a lone offender discharge a firearm at a house on Elmwood Place before making a swift getaway in a Land Rover.
CCTV footage captured the chilling moment. A man, clad entirely in black and obscuring his face with a balaclava, is seen alighting from a black Land Rover. Armed with a handgun in one hand and a mobile phone in the other, he proceeds to film himself firing three shots towards the property. He then promptly re-enters the luxury vehicle and flees the scene.
Fortunately, no one was present inside the home at the time of the shooting. However, the incident was not reported to authorities until January, significantly hindering the potential for immediate forensic and ballistic analysis at the scene.
Senior Constable Mitchell Jones, speaking about the incident, emphasised the extreme danger posed by such an act. “There are plenty of people at their home, or are going home or staying home,” he stated. “I would describe it as reckless.” Police are treating the shooting as a targeted act of intimidation, intended as a threat rather than a genuine attempt to cause harm or enter the premises.
The quality of the CCTV footage has made it difficult for investigators to identify the make and model of the Land Rover, or to obtain clear details about the perpetrator. Crucially, the video recorded by the shooter himself has not yet been recovered by police.
Senior Constable Jones acknowledged the impact on the local community. “Residents were quite shocked and concerned” by the targeted attack, he said, adding that they have been cooperative in assisting with the ongoing investigation.
While the investigation continues, police currently believe this to be an isolated incident. They are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. The perpetrator’s decision to record his actions suggests a potential for bragging or a misguided sense of accomplishment, which investigators hope may lead to a breakthrough. The use of a firearm in a residential area, especially with the potential for stray bullets to endanger bystanders, underscores the severity of the charges the individual would face if apprehended.
