Guy Sebastian Reflects on Health Battles and Emotional Journeys During “The Piano” Filming
Last year presented significant challenges for Australian music icon Guy Sebastian. The popular artist, widely recognised for his past role as a coach on The Voice, underwent two spinal surgeries within a single week to address debilitating nerve pain. It was during this period of recovery and ongoing discomfort that he commenced his new role as a mentor on the heartfelt television program, The Piano.
Sebastian, 44, candidly shared with TV WEEK that he was “not really” feeling his best at that time. The physical limitations were considerable.
“I couldn’t turn, and I had to sit in a certain way,” he recalled. “I was just trying not to be difficult on the shoot, but it was pretty uncomfortable having to sit for that long. I remember having the thought of, ‘Just push through, just push through, don’t be a drama queen.’”
However, as Guy found himself seated alongside acclaimed concert pianist Andrea Lam, listening to ordinary Australians share their personal narratives and their deep-seated passion for music with host Amanda Keller, a profound shift in his perspective began to occur. The stories of the participants resonated deeply, particularly that of a young woman whose life was irrevocably altered at the age of 17 when she was struck by a truck, and who only awoke from a coma at 18.
“This accident, a blink-of-an-eye moment, changes the rest of her life and her family’s life,” Guy explained. “And here I am in that chair going, ‘Oh, I’m a bit uncomfortable.’ Suddenly, it shakes you out of your own head.”
Another deeply moving experience for Sebastian during the filming of The Piano was an unexpected reunion with a figure from his past.
“The producers didn’t know, no-one knew… It’s someone I sang with as a child growing up, and then, through until I was 21 or something, I hung out with this beautiful person who was just the sweetest person in my life. And then they rock up, and I immediately burst into tears.”
Guy admitted that throughout the filming process for The Piano, he would frequently find himself overcome with emotion, weeping uncontrollably, only to be followed by moments of unexpected laughter.
“And no competition is what I love about it the most,” he added, highlighting a key difference from his previous television experiences.
This is not to say that Sebastian, who dedicated six years as a coach on the competitive singing show The Voice, has any reservations about such formats.
“I think they both have their place, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Voice,” he clarified. “They don’t make fun of people, and they don’t treat people as just a commodity. They’re so caring.”
It has been nearly 23 years since Guy Sebastian first captivated the nation on a competitive singing show: the inaugural season of Australian Idol. Since then, his career has been marked by consistent success, with 11 of his albums reaching the top 10. His global fanbase includes none other than the legendary Celine Dion, who recently shared her admiration for Sebastian in a TikTok video, declaring, “I love sooo much Guy Sebastian!”
Sebastian described the experience of waking up to such a public endorsement from Dion as “phenomenal.”
“I fell asleep in this dusty, dirt-covered outfit that I was wearing the day before because I was moving house down south,” he recounted. “I was on my own, and I got some Lean Cuisine from the servo down the road, went to bed, and woke up with my phone buzzing that Celine likes me!”
Now, with his physical health fully restored and Guy feeling “good as gold,” he is enthusiastically preparing for his upcoming national tour, aptly titled “100 Times Around the Sun.”
“I’m working out again, and I’m feeling fit and feeling definitely, definitely prepared,” he stated with confidence.
Guy, who is a father to two sons, Hudson and Archie, with his wife Jules, revealed that his 11-year-old son, Archie, possesses an extraordinary singing talent.
“He’s getting mind-blowingly good. Technically, the things he’s doing – they’re the things you can’t teach.”
In a testament to his son’s burgeoning musical prowess, Guy has extended an invitation for Archie to join him on stage for a performance during the tour.
“He said he’s pretty keen,” Guy shared. “The good thing is he’s got a musical he’s doing at the moment, and he’s on stage for that in a month or so. I think he’ll get a real hunger for it. Once he does that, he’ll have a little bit more confidence. He’ll be so nervous, but I reckon he’ll do it. He might pull out on the night, but we’ll try.”
