As families across the nation gear up for the February half-term break, with many planning exciting trips and getaways, a leading travel association is urging holidaymakers to prepare for significant changes that could impact their journeys. With a notable portion of families, around 15 per cent according to recent research on Australian holiday habits, opting for international travel during this period, a smooth and stress-free experience is paramount. Whether the allure is the promise of winter sun, the thrill of hitting the ski slopes, or exploring new cityscapes, a substantial number of Australians are set to travel in the coming days.
The travel trade association, ABTA, is issuing a strong recommendation for travellers to meticulously plan and prepare for their half-term excursions, highlighting a number of travel-related adjustments that travellers need to be aware of.
Navigating New Entry Requirements
Across Europe, a new biometric system, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), is being implemented. This system will require non-EU nationals, including Australian citizens, to provide fingerprints and facial images upon entry into the Schengen Area. The Schengen Area encompasses most EU member states, along with Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
Initially slated for launch in October 2025, the automated IT system saw airports and ports granted an extension until April 2026 to fully integrate the technology as a mandatory requirement.

Furthermore, a parallel system, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), is scheduled to be introduced at Australian airports from February 25, 2026. Under these new regulations, international visitors will need to secure digital permission to enter Australia. This permission can be obtained through either an ETA or an eVisa.
The ETA will grant foreign tourists the ability to enter Australia and remain in the country for a period of up to six months. This authorisation can be used for various purposes, including tourism, business activities, visiting family members, or engaging in short-term study. Once approved, the ETA will be electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. However, final clearance will still be subject to the discretion of a Border Force officer upon arrival in the country.
It is important to note that Australian citizens and dual-nationals will not require an ETA. Nevertheless, ABTA advises that if you hold dual nationality and are an Australian citizen travelling back to Australia on or after this date, you must carry your Australian passport or certificate of entitlement to present upon your return.
Australian Holiday Hotspots and Preferences
But where are Australians choosing to spend their winter breaks? Research indicates a diverse range of preferences. Between November and March, a significant 37 per cent of holidaymakers with school-aged children are planning city breaks. Cruises are also a popular choice, with approximately 38 per cent of travellers opting for a sea voyage. For those seeking warmer climes, 26 per cent intend to chase the winter sun.
The research also revealed that 15 per cent of families are keen to hit the slopes for a spot of skiing or snowboarding.

For those embarking on ski holidays, ABTA strongly advises holidaymakers to exercise caution when purchasing travel insurance. It is crucial to ensure that policies explicitly cover winter sports activities, as many standard policies do not include such provisions.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, emphasised the importance of these breaks, stating, “We know how important holidays are for family life – a chance to take time out and be together, uninterrupted by daily life.” He added, “We want them to go as smoothly as possible, which is why, ahead of half-term, we’re offering a few timely reminders. With a few changes coming into force, it is important that travellers understand what may be different for their holiday this time around, and allow extra time for going through passport control checks.”
